Here's a little inpsiration for you, and probably me....I've been thinking my 16" Grendel middy needs to go to around 13" so I can sorta replicate my 6.8 SBR before I sold it.

6.8 SBR upper prior to sell

Good luck on your build.

thanks for the inspiration LMTrocks

what kind of handguard/rail system are you running there?

also curious.....which of the two (6.8 vs 6.5) do you like the best and why?

Handguards are Troy TRX VTac 9" on my 10.5 SBR and 11" on my Grendel.  My 6.8 had the 11" and I loved how light they were plus the profile is just perfect.  Keeping a pressure pad for the TLR-1 right above the VFG allows me to run the light if necessary and also give a place for my thumb to go if the MBUS need deployment.  Having the light at 12 o'clock is like having a light shine directly into the FOV which means seeing your *target* faster.  My only wish is that Troy would do a 10" version of the HG so I could have just a little more room to put the light forward and give some breathing room for my back ups.  It'd also look better having the barrel completely covered, imho.
Maybe someday...

As far as the 6.5 vs 6.8 debate––-no debate with me.  I liked them both alot.  When I sold the 6.8 it was simply because I was offered $100 more for it than I had in it.  It would've been used as a deer gun this fall but so could my 6.5G and both are lightweight enough that I didn't see a huge difference.  Only reason I kept the 6.5 is because it shoots cheaper than 6.8 does with Wolf loads at $13/20.  I could have reloaded 6.8 for that much but I'm also starting to try to figure some subsonic loads for my 7.62x39 and multiple set of dies and brass and powders all add up quickly.

If you're getting a midlength Grendel barrel you might consider keeping the barrel to 12.7-13" as that will give sufficient dwell time to cycle the action on your gun.  And get a set of Troy 11" HGs from AIM.  They're awesome.

awesome info...thanks again.  one reason i'm going with the 6.5 is the coming cheap wolf ammo (steel case) and the $13/box for current brass cased wolf is pretty good.  i too have multiple reloading capabilities but generally like to shoot factory ammo unless its subsonic 308 or something along those lines which i load myself.

my Grendel build is a carbine length with a front sight/rail gas block.  do you know what's the shortest length the barrel can be cut to which will allow adequate dwell time for semi and F/A shooting?

10.5" 6.8 SPC

For a carbine gas system the shortest barrel I'd go to is 10.3" simply because I have not seen anything shorter.  When I made my first SBR I had the upper made from a 16" barrel and chopped and threaded to 10.5" and the gas port went from 2mm (.079) to 3/32" (.094) and it runs like a top. Not sure how much the gas port will have to open up for a 10.5" Grendel but I can't imagine it would be a great deal. When you get your barrel use a pin gauge to find what the port size is and go up .005 each time until the bolt holds open on empty. Tune it for whatever buffer is in the SBR'd lower at the time unless you want to change buffers for each upper you have if you have others.

yes and yes....thanks again.  i have several buffers on hand to experiment with.  Endine, AAC rate reducer, H2, Standard, etc. etc and will try them and see how she runs once i decide on barrel length, which i'm thinking is going to be 12.5-inches....
