my springfield M1 has a 4,385,XXX serial number

the chart that i have only shows build dates / serial numbers up until 1945, 3.8 mil serial number range.

so should i assume my springfield was probably built in 1946 or 1947 ?

I have a Springfield, 4.29mil serial with the original barrel. The barrel date on mine is 5/53 and I expect yours was probably put together sometime in late 1953 as well. What is the barrel date on yours? Springfield quit building Garands after the end of the war and resumed production around 1952 when things heated up in Korea.

well, i thought it was 11-63, but now im not sure... the top edge of the "6" is flat, maybe its 11-53 ??

That could very well be 11-53 and the original barrel then.

Could be an 11-63 rebuild. Those 1960s barrels have a good reputation for accuracy.

thanks alot. mine says it was built in '53. so i am guessing my barrel is also a '53, not a '63. the bottom of the 5 is kind of rounded off like a 6, BUT, the top is flat leading me to believe it was a 53.

hrmmm...

id guess just see how long smith enterprises has been around. find out when the company started, and wammo ! it was built between then and now !

there probably isnt a database for SEI rifles like there is on USGI rifles, unless if by chance smith could tell you personally.

nice

is that the original stock?

Link Posted: 9/18/2009 7:58:57 AM EST
Nope. It went through rebuild in the '60s at the Red River Army Depot and the stock has a Circle P on the grip and a boxed RIA over EB on the left side of the butt. Most likely changed out at that time.
