So I've been researching this a bit. And wanted to try and set up a 20 gauge for 3-gun and tactical type shooting. 1. Just to see if I could do it, and 2. Give my wife and kids something to start on. I know it can be done I've seen some during 3-gun matches.

So right now I'm looking at either an 1100 or 11-87 to start with. I know I'll need a Nordic Components tube kit and follower. Anyone have ideas on stocks or other equipment that is 20 gauge specific?

I put together a Stoeger 3020 and have shot several matches with it.  It really is light and nimble and the 20 does not suffer with knock down power.  Slugs shoot straight.  The stuff that fits the 12 ga fits the 20 (bolt handle, safety etc).  The 12 shell may be handier to load, but the 20 may be fine for smaller hands.

Thanks, I'm looking for something that's a bit easier for my wife or kids to handle as they learn. My wife is short and my Versa-Max beats her up, she has shot my Winchester 1400 and done okay with trap and skeet. However that's not a gun worth trying to set up for 3-gun.

is a youth model 1100 stock too short?.... I'm not that familiar with the 20ga but shot a 12 for a lot of years.... the e zee loader mag lever is a 50/50 proposition as well as the large charging handle... would suggest they not be used... if you get a field grade gun with a lot of drop to the stock, add a smooth rubber saddle on the comb to keep the recoil from smacking them in the cheek, and help raise the head

I forgot to add, the Stoeger 3020 comes in compact form.

How is the recoil with these?
Reason that I ask is that I'm a fugitive from the surgery table. There are good odds of ending up listed as permanently disabled/unemployable at 61 with the neck vertebrae problems I got. Firing a couple of 12 GA rounds from my 870 would leave the ring & little fingers on both hands numb for days. And if I could get a low recoil 20 GA, would get my arse back out for a few games.

Just picked up an 11-87 Compact with the intention of letting my kids use it.  21" barrel reminds me of my old Special Field.

It comes with a spacer kit to go to about 14".  I swing my M2 20g better, but it would make a dandy little turkey gun.

Was a little over $500 at Wallyworld.

The inertia guns certainly have a different recoil pulse.  I am not sure if it would rub you the wrong way.  Otherwise,  recoil is a pussy cat.

I run 20 gauge across the board.  My deer gun is a Weatherby SA 457.  Ghost ring sights and pistol grip stock.  Basically a copy of the Beretta 390 series.  Been perfectly happy it with considering the price ($399 as I recall).  As far as after market is concerned, my understanding is a Benelli Nova extended mag will work.  I haven't tried it and doubt I will.

This has given me a lot of ideas. I'll probably start building this spring when I get out of California. If I get some free time while back home in MI I may go looking for a do or gun, receiver to start with.

These are the only pics I have handy of the Stoeger:

That looks good. Did you have any work done to the Barrel like lengthening the forcing cone?

No, stock otherwise.

My wife runs a 20 gauge benelli m2 and has never been at a disadvantage. In fact I try to steal it from her from to time because its so light and has virtually no recoil.

Nordic for the tube and other add on's and Invictus tactical makes some great shell cadies in 20.

Check your match regs but everything we go to allows 6's.... I've seen her decimate knock overs that others have had trouble knocking over using 6's and a modified choke.

A few years back I had to go to less recoil on my right shoulder.

I set up a 26" M2 20 gauge as 8+1.  While the gun is light, I have never found the recoil a problem.  If you fill the mag tube it swings a bit smoother and you can always add weight to further reduce recoil.  I also found it to be a fun gun on sporting clays and invariably someone is always wanting to try it out.

I'll keep that one in mind. I had been solely looking at the Remington's. Also thanks for the suggestion on the invictus shell caddies. I had been looking for suggestions on caddies and hadn't found any yet.

Still in the planning stage. I'm hoping to possibly turn this into a how to if everything goes right. Either that or I'll give you guys fits of laughter on an epic fail.
