im building an imbel FAL and i was pretty sure that i wanted it to be a 16" carbine but now im thinking maybe ill make it 18". i already have a 16" ar15, why should i have two 16 inchers? opinions? i do know that i will not be putting any kind of brake on it. i figure if i cant have a real flash suppressor then i dont need naything on it. besides, i LIKE recoil

I'd go with the 18" barrel. You probably won't have to mess with the gas port in the barrel with that barrel length, but if you went 16" or 16.25" then you probably would.
I also prefer the handling and aesthetics of the 18" barrel over the 16". |

For what it is worth, ORF builds their carbines with 16 inch barrels.

some of the guys at falfiles who built 18" carbines said they still had to open the gas port a little. but im not too worried about that, i know that i could loose some veloc. with the 16", but i dont think its much. i think im leaning towards the 18.

I like my 18" with standard length gas system, I also like the looks of the 16" on a shorty gas system.

Another vote for the 18" - you'll not notice the extra 2 inches but the target sure will.
