I recently put a speedfeed stock on my 11-87 and there is a gap between the stock and receiver. I read a few reviews on Midway and Cabela's that said to sand the part of the stock that extends into the receiver. My question is,  what does the bearing plate do? I'm wondering if I could just leave it out to close the gap.

You don't use the stock bearing plate with synthetic stocks, only wood stocks.  Take it out.
