man that is beautiful...if i didnt already have an A1 i'd make one like that and SBR it...where'd you get all the parts for it?

Sold it originally to a buddy in SF twenty years ago and he SBR'ed it. Just moved back to KY, called and asked if I wanted it back - so I bought it and submitted the paperwork.

Since then I have traded a Colt "1" & "N" marked buttstock, 4-position tube, receibver endplate and castle nut for the two-position Colt vinyl acetate-coated two-position stock from "X-eyed" over on SIGforum.

I also replaced the old bull barrel with a 16" Colt "O"-marked post-ban lightweight barrel also from SIGforum and had ADCO chop it and open the gas post to 0.093".

The upper and receiver are Colt SP1, I replaced all the internals with new Colt parts. I replaced the detents and springs, the handguards, and A1-style flat handguard retaining ring came from Billbo over at EE.

The flash suppressor was a left-over from twenty-plus years ago, and MONGO is currently fine-tuning and parkerizing it for me.

I had considered refinishing the upper and lower and smoothing out the scratches on the buttstock but decided to leave it as is.

Probably my favorite SBR (next to my XM607A), and the paperwork should be back around Christmas or New Year's so then I can bring it home as opposed to driving one county over and working on it.

YOU DON"T NEED A FLAT DELTA RING! The XM177E2 was the first AR/M16 type to use the current style slip ring, and if you mount a flat type on it you are "deoriginalizing" it.

Hell, 25 years ago, when I built my own 177E2 copy, I had to scrounge all over the place for a tapered type.

Re the ejection port cover, use an A1 type if you can't stand the new style, but as far as I'm concerned, the new type is worlds better. Ask any ex GI who mangled the cover on his A1 because he forgot to close the cover before closing the action

Anyone have an idea of what kind of FH that is, and where to get one?

How hard is it to get the reall XM177 flash/sound suppressor? I am 80% certain that I came accross one in parts box full of cool M16 parts. The guy was an armorer during Vietnam and had a bunch of really cool stuff, including the M16 treasure chest. It looked different from the 16inch slipover and the 5.5inch permanantly affixed unit with is commonly seen. It was shorter*About 4 inches* and pretty heavy. I would have bought it, but having what the BATF considers to be an unregestered sound suppressor doesnt really appeal to me. I read that the Xm177 unit drops the sound level to that of a standard 20inch model, but havent seen any decibel levels or anything like that. Anyone have one or know the backstory about this unit. I think the concept of an inclusive flash/sound suppressor is fascinating and quite promising.

Actually, I'm not missing a bayonet lug at all.

Okay, you find a pic of an original XM177E1 or E2 that has a bayonet lug and I'll add one...

And the E2s did have the current delta handguard slip ring, but the E1s had the flat ring.

And about that 30 rounder making it look filthy...whatever floats your boat.

And my other XMs are missing bayonet lugs, too.

Damn. I guess i can declare my ass owned.

I have never, before today, seen a military variant without a bayonet lug. Maybe i jsut wasn't looking for it. But i still say anything prior to the A2 deserves a good old USGI 20.

While we are on the subject of early Colt carbines what is the most correct retractable stock to use on one (Excluding one of WA Toms repo stocks) An Early Alumumin or Plastic stock?

And were any guns made with out the foward assist?

early M16s were "slabsided" (without forward assist or case deflector) and most true SP1 rifles and carbines are slabsided.

NAM,

My XM177 is one county over waiting for paperwork approval (Probably Christmas or New Year's), but I'll try to get over in the meantime and take one of my twenty-round mags and get a photo of it dressed up in proper attire.

A 30-rd was all my dealer had when I took the pic...

I agree it will look better...

It's a twenty+ year-old flash suppressor from Quality Parts, identical to this one from Bushmaster.

Bushmaster 4.5" XM177 flash suppressor

I'll probably upgrade in the future to one from Total Silence, Inc., and just picked up another Colt 16" lightweight barrel to have ADCO chop so I can start my XM177E2 project next.

The barrel extends 0.195" from the front of the front sight base to where the threaded portion starts (due to a typo 10.2" instead of 10.02") and Mongo is fixing the flash suppressor so that it screws to the point of almost contacting the front sight base like this one instead of rechopping the barrel:

You can get reproductions from WA_Tom dba Total Silence. He has a forum in the Industry Section.

I second getting parts from BillBo in EE. Great guy to do business with and fair prices.

Found their web site last night, couldnt figure out how to order them? So I emailed Tom. Are these handguards high quality? I dont have a problem paying the money for them just dont want to buy them if their junk. Any body use the original stock from them. and what kind of quality is it?

It is a "sound moderator" to do just what Ryno said, and the ATF people do consider it to be a supressor. I had one on my issued XM177E2 when I was with 2nd Ranger Bn. Ft. Lewis, WA in the late 70's, early 80's.

I/we did not notice any change in volume when we swapped it on to 20 inch bbls and back. They are solid and appear to be one piece welded assemblies with no real way to dis assemble or clean them. I one looks through it when it is removed from the barrel, you can see symmetrical holes running along the length of the interior. We would soak them in RBC for hours / days but no noticable change in sound volume.

And I ask again. Why are you looking for a flat slip ring for an XM177E2 clone, when the original was tapered? Look at the pic of the E2 in the middle of the batch hanging on the wall. It's tapered.

The slip ring on the first issue, 10 inch barrelled, XM177 was a special job that was only used on that type and no other. Rounded at the edges, a hump in the middle, and no grooves. Not really too practical I guess, which is probably why the E2 went to the tapered style.

Sweet photos!! But I have to ask, Does anyone have any actual photos of Military issue carbines with the shorty triangle H/Gs & The retractable stock as shown in the photo?
I ask because I never saw an AR in this configuration other than here on AR15.com!!

The moderator / muffler found on the originals...

how much does it reduce the DBs from the weapon?
What effect would it have on a 14 inch carbine as far as reducing sound?
