SBR = Short Barreled Rifle I've exhausted my knowledge of the subject.

As far as I know it becomes one when you attach a buttstock, or a reciever not originally registered as a pistol reciever.

so like those bushmaster carbon pistols for example, adding a butt stock makes them a SBR? that sucks.

Can you use a carbine length buffer tube if you drill the threads out so it won't take a stock?

Just a dumb question here..... We've all seen those goofy looking things that'll replace the slide on your 1911, give you a 16" barrel and a stock to make an odd-looking carbine. Since when you add the stock, you're also adding the longer barrel, its all OK? Also, while they look goofy, and I don't think they'd be all that useful (to me, anyway) has anyone ever used one? Impressions?

Well as another example, take my own AR-15 pistol project I describe here... http://jobrelatedstuff.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=174700&w=myTopicPop This is a NON-BAN Bolt Action AR-15 pistol. I can remove the pistol buffer and the pistol upper and replace it with a normal post-ban compliant stock and upper and my NON-BAN AR-15 pistol could be used as a POST-BAN AR-15 Rifle! Note, I am saying this is Non-Ban as there is no ban on bolt action pistols... never was so no ban affects it! I can then remove the post-ban AR-15 parts and return this to an appropriate legal configuration as a pistol and I am fine. If the crime bill dies, I can replace this upper with a pistol length semi-auto pistol upper and have a legal semiautomatic AR-15 pistol! Note, this ONLY works because I bought a NEW, NEVER ASSEMBLED stripped AR-15 lower and this lower was purchased on my federal and state forms as a PISTOL RECEIVER! You can NEVER convert a rifle to a pistol so the lower must be built as a pistol FIRST and then you can convert it to a rifle. Stupid law, but as long as you follow the steps, no big deal!

I should add, I have some other info on this topic here but I never did get an answer from the BATFE regarding several of the points in red... http://www.quarterbore.com/nfa/sbr-aow-pistol.html Perhaps the letter got lost in the mail?
