im sure people ask this all the time but i was wondering what kind of optic would be good for my bushmaster shorty ak? i dont want to spend too much but i want a good optic. the one i have on it now is all big and mounted on the handle. i have a flat top and i want to use it

do you want a magnified scope or some type of dot scope?  For me, since I rarely shoot mast 200 yards, a dot scope (Aimpoint Comp M) has suited me just fine.

yeah i was thinking like a "red dot" optic.

My personal preference would be in this order:

1. AimPoint
2. EOTech
3. OKO

Of course, the AimPoint is the most expensive and the OKO the least.
