I have been looking for original Colt parts and was wonder what an SP1 is. There is an SP1 A3 upper for sale and I want to make sure it will drop in on my Colt lower. Thanks in advance, 2200v

The sp1 was the original ar15 colt manufactured
in the mid 60s and 70s. I assume a sp1 a3 upper is a flattop upper with the triangle
sp1 handgaurds should fit your lower. But find
someone who has done it to be sure.

The SP1 upper would not have a milspec front pivot pin, Your Colt depending upon the age might or might not have a mil spec front pivot pin. So take off your current upper, if a .250 1/4" drill bit fits tightly in the hole in the upper then the sp1 upper will not work without an offset adapter pin,  if your hole in your upper is bigger than the 1/4" drill bit then the SP1 upper will fit fine.

The SP1 was such a deadly killing machine from the hip that it was targeted towards blind fat cops.

That old Colt ad has to be the worst possible picture I have ever seen.  the cop isn't holding the rifle properly, and notice his reverse revolver holster setup.

Who was this aimed at - Barney Fife?

A true SP1, as listed above, has a large hole pivot pin.

If it's an "SP1 A3" (no such thing) then they might be referring to a Daniels Defense flat top large hole upper.... which is nice and a direct bolt up (sometimes tight, requires some fitting if new)

No, as you can see in the ad, this COP has a magazine in the weapon, Barney was not allowed to have a loaded magazine.

In the 70's I bought 2 R-6000s NIB. One (1974), came with A1 Stock, the other (1979), came with A2.

If the "A2" features werent developed until 1984 or so... how could a R6000 in 1979 have one?  Is is just a difference between early A1 (no trapdoor) and late A1 (with trapdoor) or does it truely have the A2 stock (extra 1" of length and a flatter baseplate?)

Correct, didn't realize there was more to it than the trapdoor. So it was early A1 and late A1. No longer have it so I cannot compare it to my newer A2s.

Looks like the cop in the pic thinks the front site is a thumbhole grip. That or he is trying to shit his pants.
