hi guys im new to the board.... jsut got my first ar15 about a month ago...

ive put about 500 rounds through it... the first 200 was pretty good maybe one jam

and it seems any time i put 20+ rounds in the D&H (green follower) it wont strip .... sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldnt... and to top it off it would jam under the feed rail... like right under the point where it would feed fine...

i found when i was using green tip ammo it was better but not fixed.... any kind of hollow point ammo was jsut horrible...

then today... i realize that the mag is loose when engaged and if i push it forward it will feed flawlessly.... so my question is.... is my mag garbage? or is the mag release clip thing ( forgive my newbness) that holds the mag bad?... im going to take a real close look tonight when i stip it down for a cleaning

the gun is an lmt upper 16.5 with a RRA lower stage 1

the date on the mag is 9 of 05

i hope to get to the bottom of this casue it seems more than one person is having these issues.... if it is my mag.... what would you guys suggest for a flawless working mag? (not HK... too $$$)

i appreciate any info

jake

Don't worry about it.  It's the arfcom way.  It's the only way some people have to feel superior.

ok i appologize i found ONE out of many posts that mention my mag clip release issue and all that was to be found was..... " during a group buy of 1000 mags one guy had feed lip problems and he thought the release clip was out of spec"..... and wow that was it on that....

thanks for the help guys ill check out the trouble shooting checklist...

did the checklist ..... it all checks out minus the part under test firing where it says use a proven mag... haha

You might also check to make sure your hammer isn't burred, or the firing pin collar. I've seen both on my guns that don't have shrouded firing pins...see here:

Probably not your problem, but worth double-checking into.

I've had great luck so far with the Center mags. Or any of the USGI preban mags are a fairly safe bet.

I've read in a number of places that you shouldn't load more than 18rds in any manufactures 20rd magazines.

My first bit of advice is to buy more than one mag, then get back to us.

Try other mags from different manufacturers, if the problem persists you may hve to tighten the mag release Had a similar problem on my Armalite

Exactly.  That "33710" stamped on the side of my mag bodies lets me know I don't have to worry aboot a ting, Mon!

20 rounds in a 20 rounder.

30 rounds in a 30 rounder.

If they won't function to spec, set them aside as range mags.

Read the mag forum.  Several people have posted similar problems with the current batches of D&H mags having sharp feedlips, which are causing the fail to strip problems.

i noticed this...... but like i said i was wondering if my mag clip release was bad which no one has even commented on.... so it must not be the problem and that was not discussed on the other post...

but thanks, you think if i took a dremmel tool to the feed lips and smoothed them out that the mag would feed properly?

Yes, that's what I did and now they work fine.

I damned sure wouldnt use a dremel.  With the wrong wheel, you will ruin your mags.  I'd just use a bit if fine sandpaper, or a fingernail file.... if I felt they needed it.

Mine were having problems feeding from the bolt release... but when I test fired them in the feild, they ran just fine.  I plan on polishing mine the old fashioned way.  BANG, BANG, BANG.

Most likely, there is nothing wrong with your mag release hole.  Just when you push it forward, you change the angle for the feedlip just a bit and this is likely helping to overcome some of the force required to strip the round from the burred feedlip.

so how much needs to come off then ...? im thinking at least 1 mm or so would be jsut right.... (pretty much just smoothing out the corners)

i am rather skilled with a dremmel tool... i have many attachments... i should be just fine... thanks for the warning though

Kevin, if somebody of Pat's caliber recommends downloading by two, I'd take that any day over the quirky mag crowd here.

I'll agree with you there.  My rifle instructor also recommends downloading by two.

Personally, I dont download.... just because it has never been an issue for me.  If I used my weapon for a living, I would probably follow my training.... whichever way it was.

I had always heard of downloading but never gave it much thought since I wasn't into AR's at the time.  When I got my first AR after the ban I had failures to strip rounds 30/29 from NIW Labelle's.

I recently checked one of my new D&H mags and fed fine from number 30 on down.  But lately I've only been loading to 20.  No other reason than the fun lasts longer and XM comes 20 to a box.

The attitude isn't limited to AR15.com forum, it's the standard attitude of ANY forum.  Only thing that changes is silly little acronyms that are used to slam newbs for asking newb questions, etc.  ie: 87

For the OP, it sounds like your mags are the same date of manufacture as the other D&H mags that are having problems.  I bought 5 with a date stamp of 02/06 and they ran flawlessly in a new Bushmaster.

I did however have fail to feed problems with the new Q3131 ammo in my 2 mags with green followers.  Im going to have to try that ammo again in the proven mags.
