Upgrading to a Hogue, but I cant fit a allen wrench socket into the pistol grip underside.

1. what size is the allen screw?

2.  What did you use to loosen it?  Nothing I have is small enough to fit into the opening of the grip...

1. 3/16"

2. Not sure what you mean...

I didn't have any allen screwdriver things long enough to get down into the grip, so I used a extended socket wrench that I usually use on my car.  Worked perfectly.  My screw was like a socket with an allen slot in the middle.

I just ordered a 3/16" T-handled Allen wrench from Snap-On that I keep in my gun toolbox for this.

Alternatively, you can get a screwdriver with interchangeable bits and just buy a 3/16" Allen wrench bit to go with it. The screwdriver should be long enough to fit inside the grip.

Another idea would be to buy a Colt- or Stag-type grip screw with a regular (slotted) screwdriver head. You could then remove it with just a regular screwdriver.

Be careful when removing the grip.  There is a tiny spring under there that if lost, will induce a very long string of foul language.

+2!

Oh, and don't move the selector switch too.

You can use a standard slotted screwdriver to remove it (even with allen head) if you have one with the right or nearly right width head.

Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to strip the threads in that hole when you are doing that operation!

Oh, and the spring that you will find in the pistol grip is an essential part of the safety, make sure you don't lose it and it gets reinstalled on the new grip.

Another tip I can offer, push the grip all the way onto the lower, THEN tighten propery. Dont let the bolt draw the grip up to the lower. That way, your more likelt to get the selector/safety spring and detent lined up correctly.

ETA: You may need 3 hands to do this if the fit is loose, but more than likely, it will be a little snug anyway. That way, youll only need to keep the two pushed together with a minimal of force/pressure.

and a detent.

These are the spring and detent for the safety/selector.

The real problem with losing these is the aggravation of paying shipping on such miniscule parts.

Call it "the stupid tax".

FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

All of these will work, but I always hated fishing around in the stock of shotguns to try to get a regular screwdriver to line up in the slot when I can't see what I'm working with.  Ruger at least made the stockbolts on my Red Label a 7/16 head bolt with a slot in it.  I use a 1/4" drive 7/16 socket on an extension with a screwdriver handle and it's easy to line up and hard to overtorque.

IIRC, the threads on the AR grip screw are 1/4x28, which should allow it to be replaced by a standard bolt of proper length which takes a 7/16 socket.  I'd never want to use a ratchet as the leverage would encourage/facilitate overtorquing.  I don't trust allen screws as I've stripped a few over time.

FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

Just an update - I finally used just a flathead screwdriver and the bolt can free.  It was a little bit of trial and error but finally found one that was the right size.

Thanks for the heads up on the spring!

I ended up putting a hogue grip on (# 15000) and wow, havent gotten a chance to fire it, but it feels so much more comfortable already!  Cant wait for the temperatures here in Michigan to finally go above freezing - cuz I am really itching to shoot the damn thing....

Best tool for the job -

Wadsworth Falls Mini Ratchet Set. Has a handle, and a ratchet, and extension. Use it all the time for work, and works perfectly for the allen bolt in the pistol grip. Kinda expensive, but worth every penny.
