Sorry for the double post, wasn't getting any action in the general forum so I though I'd let it fly over here. Anyway.....

I bought 200 rounds of .308 ammo from an old timer I met at Walmart.

He says he had the stuff in his garage for a long time and thats all he knows about it.

They are headstamped with the Nato cross in circle and also marked:

FC 61
LC 69
LC 68
WRA 67

4 diffent types all together.

So are there any problems with using this stuff to break in my new Savage 10fp??

I have read ads where guys are selling precision rifles and they always say: "no surplus ammo fired".

Why? Is it harmful to use this stuff?

One possible reason is the concern over corrosive powder and pitting of the barrel if not cleaned properly. That would certainly be bad for a precision barrel. If no surplus ammo was fired, that would be much less of a concern.
