right now i have a lmt 14.5 with a larue 7.0 rail and pinned vortex, i want to go to 10.5 and am just waiting on my form1 to come back.  so the question is do i sell the upper i have then rebuild the same thing with a 10.5bbl or just have a local smith chop and rethread the bbl to 10.5" ? will this affect the operation of the gas system or anything else?

Buy a new 10.5 upper, keep the 14.5 for the new lower your going to need to buy.

Someone who knows the AR gas system well should be able to shorten the barrel and open up the gas port if necessary. ADCO would be a good place to start.

i thought about the new barrel way, i could do that myself. thing is the flash hider is pinned on my 14.5 therefore i cannot get the larue rail off without removing it. then i have a low round 14.5 barrel laying around

Get a new rail and a new barrel and build a 10.5 and just use the 14.5 as is on another lower if you have one or build/.buy one. cant have too many ARs. ..Seems simple enuff.

I say build you another complete upper. Then sell the 14.5, or just keep it for another build..

Option 1. buy an additional upper & keep the 14.5 for a rainy day

Option 2. pull the barre..l sell it on the EE.. buy a 10.5 barrel.. and rock on

Option 1 allows you to go shoot with pals and not draw unwanted attention to your rifle

imo

I would sent it to ADCO and have them cut it.
They will also check if the gas port is of right size.
They won't let you down and it's very affordable.
If you have the cash then just buy a new upper and build another lower later on for the 14.5"

I was in a similar position last year with my first SBR.  I tried to sell the upper on the EE, but it would have required me taking more of a financial loss than I was willing to accept for a low mileage complete upper.  In the end, I just had the 16" barrel cut to 10.5" and the gas port was opened to .093" by JP Grips & Machine (he's on the EE in Services).  I think it was about $80 including disassembly & return shipping.  The upper runs great with even Silver Bear, suppressed or unsuppressed.

YMMV, HTH, GL

14.5" Barrel has a .063 port size

10.5" should use a .093 port size

Might want to double check that though.  I dug way back in the memory banks for that one.

That worked for me....Adco cut mine to 10.3".

Then, of course, AIM Surplus had a sale on spike's 10.5" complete uppers, and the 10.3" became a dedicated .22LR upper. The 10.5" is set up as a host for my Gemtech G5.

10.3":

10.5":

Bushmaster complete lower (Bushmaster)
Spike's Tactical 10.5" 1-7 barrel, Smith Vortex G5 mount (Aim Surplus, mount/suppressor obtained from and mounted by Gemtech)
LMT Fixed BUIS (Bravo Company)
Aimpoint M2 in Wilcox Mount (Aimpoint-SKD Tactical, Mount-Brownells)
KAC M4 RAS (EE)
Surefire Scout with KX2C Head Upgrade, Gear Sector Offset Scout Mount (EE)
Magpul B.A.D. Lever (Brownells)
Ergo Grip (Brownells)
Gear Sector Single Point Sling (Brownells)

Do so with confidence. Adco is quite good at what they do.

The MK18 CQBR uses a .070" port. If you are running 5.56 pressure ammo a lot, I would not go all the way to .093".

I think Adco would make the right decision, though...

PM...

I have a brand new LMT 10.5 upper with a KAC RAS on it that I will trade you if you would be interested. I already have a 10.5 noveske and after buying the 10.5 upper i decided i would rather something different. just havent put it on the EE yet. Never been fired, doesn't have a BCG, which is one reason i havent shot it, so you could keep yours.
