The best scope in that price range is the Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40. You'd half to pay twice as much to get anything better. www.swfa.com has the best regular price, but natchez has them on sale right now for $300. The Leupold VX-2 is a decent scope, but because the glass is not fully multicoated is only has light transmission of 88%. The Vari-XIII is fully multicoated and has light transmission of 92%. The Bushnell 4200 is also fully multicoated and has light transmission of 95%. I have compared the 2.5-10 Bushnell 4200 to the Leupold 3.5-10 Vari-XIII side-by-side, and the Bushnell is both brighter and clearer. It has a wider field of view, more windage and elevation, more range of magnification, finger adjustable windage and elevation, the windage and elevation caps have better threads, it is not as hard to move the power knob, etc. It is just a better scope than the Vari-XIII and cheaper to boot. The only downside to the 4200 is it is a bit heavier and longer. The Nikon Monarch and Weaver Grand Slams have fully multicoated glass that is as good as the Leupold Vari-XIII, and they are both definately better than the VX-2. Leupold is upgrading the Vari-XIII early next year.
