using my new flattop ATI upper with 16 " barrel,  fired about a dozen round fine then had to use charging handle to extract case, eject and feed next round. Bolt barely moves back, maybe 1/2 " at most.this continued on for each and every round. Lower functions fine with original a2 style upper.  Is it possible the gas rings are too tight?

Did you contact the manufacturer?

Suspect lack of gas.

If you can move the bolt in the carrier easily but with resistance then rings are good to go.

Misalignment or loose gas tube.

Whatever it is it changed after a dozen rounds worked normally. What can change in a dozen rounds that causes weak gas? Loose gas key; gas tube never was pinned in the gas block and blew out; gas block worked loose. There probably are some more but I can't think of any more. My brain is fried - I've been moving and placing mulch all day. This retirement shit is getting to be too much like work!
