They're ok as rail protectors, they don't do a great job shielding your hands from the hot handguard though.  I cut them up in little piece to put in front of KAC rail covers to prevent them from slipping forward when their metal clips are loose and make a ruckus.

In this pic, you can notice a little piece in front of the side KAC cover, and a bigger piece on the bottom, that one is to actually lessen the damage (not eliminate) to the bottom rails.

I never even had a set of ladders till I got this DD 13.5 from John at Rainier Arms, they are great.

They don't protect the rails as well as regular panels, however, the thinner grip makes the sacrifice worth it to me.

Btw, I don't know how to use a camera and that is why the picture looks so funny.
