There must be some trick that I have not seen. I am trying to remove the slector switch and don't want to just hammer the hell out of the darn thing. Does it need to be in "safe or Fire" position and why would it not come free with some gentile, ( and not so gentile taps)...?hinking.gif

You must remove the grip first
Link Posted: 8/24/2005 3:51:13 PM EDT
Get yourself an exploded diagram of the lower receiver and see just what is holding the selector in place. Check the Bushmaster website for a good exploded diagram.

remove the grip and a spring and d-tent will fall out. Once there out of the way the slector will come right out.

I enjoyed this answer the most. Not specific enough to be correct or incorrect but good enough to bump his post count

You do not HAVE To remove the grip. You can set the selector half way between safe and semi and drive it ou with a punch. Though repeatedly doing so could damage your reciever.

It will help to cock the hammer too. Once you get the grip off and the spring/detent out, cock the hammer and the safety should slip right out.

after you remove the grip.

and it never fails, you're gonna lose the detent, you know, the one that's held in by the grip

Chances are you won't find it if you do.

whatever you do don't forget to remove the grip first.
Link Posted: 8/24/2005 4:52:43 PM EDT
The selector switch may also be held in by the pressure of the trigger assembly. I know I couldn't get mine back in the first time ( in a RRA lower) becuase the trigger assembly was pushed up a bit. I pushed it down while sliding the selector switch in. Just my 2 cents on this. Oh yeah, remove the grip
Link Posted: 8/24/2005 5:00:44 PM EDT
Hrrrmmmm, last time I did one of those, I had to remove the grip to gain access and remove the safety detent and detent spring. Try cocking the hammer and trying it. Also if you have one of those ambi safety's, you have to remove the lever off the one side first.

Did you get it out yet?

Are you kidding? lol...
Your AR has a pistol grip, the thing that you put you hand around to grip and fire the weapon...
It's behind the trigger...

i took mine out by putting it half way between the safe and fire... and pushed it out... it actually came out pretty easy... as far as the trigger group possibly holding it back... i was changing out the trigger so that was not even an issue... i dont know if it would have an affect on it or not though
Link Posted: 8/24/2005 5:36:38 PM EDT
It's better practice to just remove the grip.

READ THIS

Then did he raise on high the Holy Lower Receiver of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst lose detents and tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou unscrew the Holy Grip. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Lower Receiver in the direction of thine EE, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Well Damn Sir, your cup of time seems to have overfloweth so that you have had too much...??

I find it easier to rem,ove the grip first. I do not like the half way setting and drive the safety out. Going back in can be difficult.

Somewhere in my garage, many small parts are gathering and will be rising against me one day.

Remove the grip to allow the spring and dentent to fall out enough to get the selector switch out.

Have you tried removing the grip?
Link Posted: 8/24/2005 6:46:53 PM EDT
Put it in a vice, upside down. Hand tighten. The selector switch will then fall right out..................................................

after you remove the grip.

The easiest thing to do is buy a new stripped lower... it won't have a selector switch installed yet.
Link Posted: 8/24/2005 7:03:15 PM EDT
Yeah, you're right. Be sure to send me the old broken one with the selector that won't come out. I'll take that POS off your hands for you.

I found the first crucial step to be ordering a new spring and detent before I removed the grip.

Link Posted: 8/24/2005 8:35:43 PM EDT
I heard tell that you need to remove the grip.
Link Posted: 8/25/2005 3:19:13 AM EDT
Ok ok ok... I drank seven beer, did locate an exploded view, and took off the grip. I did not lose the detent and now know more about the grip, spring, beer, detent than I did 24 hrs ago!
Thanks to all!!!

You had already given him the answer. It sounded like he had no idea what he was doing and might screw up some parts with the "hammer".

oops, increased my post count again
