I have seen Sentry's in the $400 - $800 range that are very good starter cases.  In some areas, Home Depot and Lowes carry these models.

Liberty Safe has a variety of low priced offerings. Good value for the size, IMO.

AMSEC isn't bad for the price.

Academy Sports here in the North Texas area has a Sentry, 14gun safe, for $299.  It is impossible to get 14 long guns in there.... but for a low cost safe, it was the best bang for the buck.  Real safe locking mechanism, hinges are NOT exposed like some cheap safes, decent thickness of metal.

Heavy enough to be difficult to carry off (some light sheet metal "safes" are really a handy box for the theif to take ALL your weapons in one trip.)

Light enough to be able to get up an apartment stairs. (with three helpers)

The next step up I could find was around $600.... and if I am spending that much, I am gonna spring for the whole enchilada... and get a BIG one.
