mid-length w/ 14.5" bbl???

can you use a midlength gas system w/ a 14.5" barrel? CMMG offers one. I am a big fan of the mid-length w/ 16" barrels.

This is basically a mechanical question. Can the benefits of the middy system be reaped w/o other problems occurring from the reduction in the gas's dwell time prior to bullet egress?

Not only can you, but 14.5's with a midlength gas system are one of my top favorite configurations.

I've posed this question before, but never really got a solid answer.
I can give you some firsthand experience soon, as I just received a new Sabre Defence 14.5" Middy upper from PKF. Just waiting on my Sabre lower now.

IMO the midlength is a better choice in gas system for a 14.5" barrel. Dwell time has to be balanced against initial pressure/rise time as well as overall gas impulse into the system.

You sort of answered your own question. CMMG wouldn't offer a barrel that would not function properly.

That being said, my CMMG-barreled 14.5" middy is my favorite AR in my arsenal...

Only a couple of days. PKF is only one state over from me. This is my second Sabre from them. Very good guys to deal with.

A 14.5" Midlength CMMG works fine for me. I've fed eveything from 55gr to 75gr with no probs...

Nah, its not needed to open the receivers. An insructor friend finally convinced me to try a VFG after showing me a way to utilize it that I liked and felt I could work with. Its mainly a reference point. Its just a standard Tango Down short VFG.

No, I havent been able to make a FDCC shoot for some time now.

I had my 16" HBAR turned down to a lightweight profile and shorted at Adco. I find that the combination of the two makes for a much more balanced feel. I've had no accuracy reduction (even out to 300yds) or reliability issues with my new setup. It just shoots.

Interesting. Having had your barrel turned down to a lightweight profile, have your groups opened up at all after sustained fire or have you noticed a higher proclivity of "flyers"?

Anybody else run a 14.5" middy that wants to chime in? Im now seriously considering this platform over a traditional M4A3 for a KISS rifle. Any more feedback would be greatly appreciated.

How about anyone with one of CMMG's lightweight 1/12 middys?

Another CMMG 14.5" Middy. Balance & handling are nice. Longer gas tube helps it run a little cooler. No reliability problems. Surprisingly accurate. Obviously I'm happy with it. All it needs is nite vision & I'll be in fat city.

ETA - Unless you gotta have a Colt or you're doing a retro build, go with a middy.

I don't do mag dumps because that just wastes ammo. I practice controlled fire. As far as I could tell with a 12x scope on when I first got it back, at 300yds the groups were just as tight as before.
