alright-

built up a lower, slapped an upper on it. i was testing mags, and noticed that when the hammer was back with a mag in, the b/c/ch will not pull all the way back easily.

dropped the mag, racks fine.

mag back in, catches.

pull trigger to drop firing pin, racks fine.

pull mag out, notice small marring on the front of the follower, possibly where the bolt catches.

ideas? and yes, the gun does this on most mags, have not tried a loaded mag yet.

Hank, Insert an empty, firmly press in on the top of the bolt catch (guess that would make it the bolt release) and rack the bolt. Does the bolt move easier than it did before?

Sounds like the bolt catch is riding up too high when tension loaded by the mag follower, and the catch is binding up on the bolt. You did remember to install the detent pin on top of the bolt catch spring. If not, then you will need to pull the catch and install the detent. If the detent pin is installed, then with the mag out, push in on the catch lever (lower side to make the catch rise up) and slowly charge the weapon. If the top of the bolt catch is catching the back of the bolt, you will need to slightly lower the top edge of the catch (ejection high side).
