I'm looking at my lower rite now and it says,cal. 5.56 on it if that helps.

Look on the barrel, not the lower. A .223/5.56 stamped lower can be modified to fire .22, 9mm, 7.62, etc, merely by putting a differnt upper and mag block(if needed). The stamping on the barrel is what will show what the rifle can fire.

Are you speaking specifically about ASA barrels or AR barrels in general? My Bushmaster is marked 5.56 and I assure you it is NOT a Wylde. |

I made the chart because in many cases the barrel markings are wrong, and markings on the lower receiver are utterly meaningless.
ASA does not use the military M16-spec "5.56" chamber, but instead uses the tigher ".223" or SAAMI-spec chamber. While this provides the potential for more accuracy with most common loads, it also means that higher-pressure military loads often have problems, usually extraction-related problems, due to the excessive pressures caused by the short "223" throat. While it is rarely *unsafe* to shoot "5.56" ammo in a "223" chamber, unreliable extraction is a common problem, and so 5.56 ammo isn't recommended for these guns. ASA's target market is primarily low-cost target ARs, not combat/duty guns. I'm not aware of ANY LEO or government agency sales by ASA. -Troy |

Troy, my buddy ordered an ASA 9mm kit and when he did they told hime to fax a copy of his agency credentials to get an LE discount. Not sure if they do a lot of LE sales, but they do/did offer a discount.

so just to clearify if the lower says 5.56 its setup for both 223 and 5.56.
are most 223 or 556? |

The lower marking is irrelevent, the marking on the barrel is what counts, often found under the handguards.

As Vinnie and HiramRanger said,
With a magazine block adapters the same lower can use many varied caliber uppers including 7.63X39, .22, 9mm,.45 cal, etc. The fact that a lower is marked 5.56 does not mean it can accept only a 5.56 upper unless there is some proprietary design or restriction. A .308 AR would take a different lower, however, because the round is bigger and the magazine are quite a bit larger. Most of my lowers say MULTI for caliber. |

My MEGA "GATOR" model lower is having FTA's "failure to accept" with both 270 WIN and 50 BMG. The lower says "MULTI" but I'm thinking something isn't right here. Any ideas?

I think you'll find that ASA uses corkscrews to cut chambers in their uppers. Avoid them!
