I'm guessing it's so that if something falls off, it stays leashed to the rifle? Seems like his scope also has the paracord around it.

When I was in, we used 100mph tape, or para cord, just to make sure that nothing fell off if the screws rattled loose.

Some people are big advocates of using 550 cord or zip ties to double secure EVERYTHING, right down to, and including, $2 canteens.

This is especially true in Army Airborne units or units that have a lot of NCOs from Airborne units.

hehehe, "Dummy Cord" would be the term for the 550 Cord on the light and other sensitive items. I suppose anybody that was looking to replicate the militarys weapons would need to do the same.

the only reason i brought that up was some of the recent gun magazines have shown scope or lights or other thing tied up like that.and that was for police snipers guns not military.

so true so very true. if it does they have to paint it to hide the scratch.

well i know alot of people here like to see what the military is using over there to see how closely they can replicate their ar to the militarys ar.

i can have very close to the militarys for just over 1200. 1 m4 ish type carbine and 1 a2 ish rifle.
to do it for that price they would have to be kit guns but i wont be afraid to scratch it.

The "dummy cording" is normally Airborne unit SOP. EVERYTHING has to be tied down - even pouches to your LCE, regardless of how they are originally attached. The main point is to keep that canteen or loaded mag pouch from coming loose and smacking some poor jumper below at terminal velocity. Smart operators not required to dummy cord stuff do it to keep gear from getting lost or dropped due to a mount breaking. The above rule wouldn't matter on weapons, as they are completely encased in 1950's (airborne rig weapons case).

And no, it ain't like Hollywood. Paratroopers don't make 300 meter head shots while descending in their chutes. Weapons don't come out till jumper is on the DZ, although I have seen some SF guys tie MP5's off without a case to a drop leg harness on a HALO rig.

didn't see anyone else answer this so i'll take a shot...

the thing on top is a paq-4, an ir aiming light. the thing on the bottom looks like a small flashlight maybe with a momentary "on" button in the buttcap?

man, all these different stocks, different lights, different sights; it's a logistical nightmare!

I just got back last month after a year tour, and M4's were by far more prevalent. I am pretty sure only SF/Ranger units get M4A1's. That was the Army, I dunno about the other services though, all the NSW guys(SEALS) had M4A1's...

Hump your ass back a klick or two with a very unhappy squad leader at your side to find a missing piece of Miles Gear and you'll tie/tape/nail/superglue all your shit.

I had it happen once. That was enough for me.

Damn helmet unit was made for a steel pot, not a Kevlar.

And if anyone is around Al Jaber, keep your eyes open for a Spyderco, I lost the damn thing off my Interceptor when I jumped down from an Up Armored Hummer. Damn thing was brand new too.

I dont know about the 82nd but I do know about the the 1 Cav. We dummy corded everything to ourselves and the weapon. In some cases constant fuckups had to have the weapon dummy corded to them didnt matter if it was an M16a2 or a 240B. If you look at my pics on the pics page you will see that I still dummy cord everything to my weapon. If you are just bench shooting it is not a problem. If you intend in any way to use that weapon ever for self defense or bugging out you should have your main weapon dummycorded every part that is loose or makes noise should be silenced with tape or somer kind of dummy cord.

i noticed all of these guys have optics of some sort or another. i was under the impression that they were just given irons and depending on the unit (and ur lucky) you'll get some optics?
