Another topic got me to pick up an old ASA A2 I have...was thinking about doing this.

I did a quick search and didn't find any rails made for this, but found several rails that would work.

The cost would be twice that of simply buying a Flat top with a good grade rear sight.

Anyone ever do this or know of the type of rail I would be looking for?

Looking at the rear sight, that cut would be critical since the top extends out, but the forward part of the handle is easy.  The rest would be simply drilling and tapping mount holes making sure to stay true and at the proper height.

any suggestions?

any thing other then this out there???

The amount of work involved seems like it wouldnt be cost effective (if its possible).  Besides that, do you mean to leave only the rear sight in tact or remove the whole thing?  because youd have to fill the hole left by the elevation shaft. (sorry, i know thats not the real name).

In short, I wouldnt try it.   did that help at all?

No you leave the rear sight.  The cut off is just forward of it.  I have seen a couple ARs like this and was wondering how its done under the cost of simply buying a flat top.

Almost impossible for you to do. Just buy a new upper.

Rock River makes one called the Ute 2. It is a flat top upper with the A2 rear sight left in place.

Sell your old upper and buy the one you want. Don't ruin it trying to make it into something its not.

Dude, some people have skill while others have to buy what they need....
Mark Brown A2 conversion Rail

Its in no freaking way impossible for me to do....I am looking for other rails out there that people know about.

thanks to all the guys who IMed me the rail link.

Your better off buying a upper receiver.

You are still better off buying a new upper.  New Flattop upper $100 + Rear Sight $50 to 80= $150 to 180 minus sale of of A2 upper $75 = $75 to 105.

That thing $77 plus ruined A2 upper $75 = $152.

It was a popular option in the days before flat top uppers were being made. I have an upper that was converted "back in the day."

I see what you mean...the math does work.  But then I have just another Flat top added to my safe.  I guess I need to think about if I want to make another flat top or this A2.5 type upper..the only thing going for it would be its not as common...

Take a look at RRA site and see if you like the way the UTE upper looks.  I don't but if that flips your boat.

Bravo Company for the receiver ($104.95). Plus when it comes to firearms going cheap is risking your life. Your better off buying a upper receiver trust me. Take care bud.

Yup.  Jim Crews has at least one.  Back before the flattop was really popular it was the only way to go for a top rail.

Like others have said, it was a useful option when flattops weren't as common as they are now (especially when you have an SP1 big hole lower.) This was done by SSK (home of the "hand cannons") and it is rock solid. Actually, the rail is a custom height specfically for use with the then-recommended by SSK UltraDot sight. It still does what I want it to so, I've seen no reason to change things. With the slickside upper and the A1 sights it's really a pretty light combo.

I took a pic of the weapon that started me down this road a week ago.  I need more info before I try this...as in ,"will the Mark Brown Rail sit flush on the receiver or does the reciever need to be milled down.  I think you only need to mill down the places where the handle gets chopped off...to make them flush.  If this is the case...I can do this no problem in my garage

posted pic in OP also...I know ppl hate to read....lol

I've considered this as well.  Just a casual thought.

There was a thread in here a while back showing detailed pics of this conversion.  I've looked for it, but to no avail.................

It was the whole carry handle bein' cut off, the stubs of what was left bein' machined down, corresponding holes machined in the rail, and roll-pinned in place in these two areas, I believe.

I'd love to see those pics again.
