can u buy a gun in a state using a diferant state's ID

Depends on state law, I use a NY ID to buy firearms in Florida, but I have to provide proof of residence.

I have bought long guns in other states, but never a handgun.

Judging by your Cali location, I wouldnt even think about it, especially if you are trying to acquire one of our beloved black rifles.  Most dealers avoid cali sales like the plague.  There are some great posts in here about staying legit in Cali, check em out...
