I would really like to make this interchangeable with a .223 upper and not have to swap the hammer, buffer, etc.

Do I have to do that with the Oly kit?

Nope, it's just pop off the .223 upper, and pop on the Oly 9mm upper.  For accessories, you may want to buy a SOCOM block ($62.50 shipped) and a buttload of STEN mags (like $2.00 each on sale from Tapco).  That way you can blast away without having to buy those really expensive Oly or Dalphon mags.

If you are using a collapsible stock, you may have to change buffers.  It just depends on what you want your rate of fire to be and what buffer you are currently using if you are using the collapsible stock.  I would also get a couple of the Lanchester 50 round mags.  They look just like the Sten mags but are much longer.  They will work just fine with the SOCOM mag block.  You can buy them for $35 each from IMA.  The addy is:  ima-usa.com/p7.html

I have a Oly 9mm Carbine Setup.  It's sweet.  I love the ability to go from 9mm to 5.56 in a matter of seconds.

You don't have to change any of your internals which to me is a plus.

Just go to Tapco and stock up on mags.  At 3 bucks a mag, you can't go wrong.

I wanted to support RRA since their are a sponsor.  But when I heard that I needed to spend a serious chunk of change on buffers and hammers and such I said, heck, I'll just buy an Oly Arms.  Can use the cheap Sten mags too.  No expensive Colt 9mm maglove my Oly Arms PCR-9 setup.

I was going with the upper only for $395 but said what the heck, I'll pay another $300 and get a compelete AR-15 in 9mm.

Anyway, grab at least 20 of the Sten mags with the sacks from Tapco.  You should get a good 15 mags out of the lot.  Hold onto 10 in the safe and use the other five as working/training mags.

I had a couple mags that were rusted but their internals, followers, plates, and springs were fine so you can use those for spare parts.  No waste.

Congrats!

Charles:

Can you post a picture of a Lancaster mag so we can get some perspective on how long it is a nd so forth?

Here is my M16 with the SOCOM mag block and the regular Lanchester mag.  To the right of it is the Lanchester mag that I sent to Oly Arms and had them put on their mag adapter for $25.

$395 for the upper? $695 for the complete rifle?  Where? When?

I'm seeing $595 for the upper and $799 for the rifle everywhere I look.

Contact Stokes, Moderator here on AR15.com.  He will take care of you.

Charles,  that's a sweet monopod (hehe).  Ain't no "Go'in prone" with that thing huh?

It would be fun on full auto though...

Make sure you get a sten mag box loader and lots of ammo... the loader makes it so easy to load that you'll burn through a case of 9mm in no time at all.

I dunno about you guys, but the sten's I got from tapco were in great condition and every one was usable. Greasy as hell, but in great shape. I had Azex Arms in Arizona parkerize them for $3 a mag and now they're better than new!

Yup. All 10 of mine were in almost like new shape, except there was hardly any finish on them. My dealer is going to re-park them for me. No prob.

I got 20 of them done for $60 shipped when NSFjojo was still working there, I can't say if they will still do them for that price.  That's up to Derek, the owner.  For all I know Jojo could have done them on his own, but I shipped them to Azex.

When I sent them I took the springs and followers out. I left the bodies and floorplates covered with grease, and they came back looking beautiful!

Just so ya'll know.  Atlantic Firearms sold me a new Oly upper for $500 with shipping included.

Talk to Blaine Bunting, he is a terrific person to deal with.  He even called me tonight to give me the tracking number for the shipment!

No.  The RRA 9mm upper is a Colt style 9mm.  The ejector is on the blocks inside the mag well.  The Oly "spring ejector" is on the upper.  Also, the RRA needs an feed ramp, while the Oly upper has a cone shaped bolt (which fits into the barrel).

To use the Sten mag in the Colt style, you have to use (what I've been dubing) the "Sten block"; a modified Colt two  piece block which will work w/ Stens (just notch like the uzi mags.)

i had a 40 upper olympic and i liked it a lot but it was preban setup and the mags was hard to find, got it for 350.00 and should have kept it since they were like 600.00 then. I would like to get 9mm one,but never shot one yet. The 40 would shot 6" at 100 standing! I was impressed.

Kaliburz: What do you have to modify on the Colt block to work with the Sten mags? It looks like you just ramped the block in front of the mag. Is that all? No mods to the bolt?

Read this link start to finish!!

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=136191

This is the best source for making a Colt style 9mm work with the $2 TAPCO Sten mags.  If you want a set of instructions w/pic Email me and I will send you a copy.  One of the members put the instrucions together as a .doc file and the instructions are very insightfull.  I have modified 2 sten mags so far and am waiting to get to the range for testing.  Based on the fact both mags will feed by hand I assume they wil cycle under fire just fine.

Now dont go and buy up all the Sten mags after you do this dammit, I still need more!![;)]

No mods to the bolt needed. Same bolt, only real mod is to the mag well adapter. You must use a 2 piece adapter for Sten mags.
