If you could only build one ar, perhaps because of limited funds, how would you configure it? pics are always a great example!

for me, it would be a 12.5 barrel with fixed front site, larue buis, aimpoint with 2 minute dot and SSA trigger.

best all around? purely subjective,

here is my idea

BM 16in LW barrel, slickside upper and MOE stuff

A kiss carbine with A2 upper.

Best for what? Hunting, civilian defensive use, varminting, entry work, sniping, counter sniping, 3 gunning, combat? Civvie, LEO, mil?

The point is that they are all different-a rifle set up for long range varminting would be lousy for entry work, for example. That's the beauty of the AR platform (even though I cringe using the word "platform"). The GI who uses the IR laser on his rifle to designate targets is going to have a much different setup than my mere civilian "bump in the night" gun. Know what I mean?

Best all around "base" setup...

14.5" upper w/ fixed FSB and railed handguards
standard lower w/ ACS, Sopmod, or Imod stock
some sort of light and QD sling
Aimpoint or 1-4 illuminated scope in QD mount

This.

That being said, for maneuverability versus velocity, ect.  I recommend a 14.5" barrel with a 7" gas system, fixed FSB.  Basically... a stock M4 Carbine is a generally good option for an entirely unspecialized role.

16"  M4 or middy with Moe and Aimpoint with flip up rear.

The one I'm working on now: DD 14.5" LW middy upper w/ 12FSPM rail, lower with MOE grip, stock and trigger guard.  It will get a G2LED, sling and ACOG TA33G-H when funds allow.

If I could only have one it would be an AR 10 carbine in 308. Thats only because I hunt larger game than pig and deer.

I built this one with 'all around' in mind.

Specs

Tactical Machining lower
Geiselle DMR
Modstock
TD grip
Areo Precision COP
Colt 14.5" SOCOM barrel w/factory  FSB
LMT BCG
Matech BUIS
Aimpoint Comp ML3 w/Larue
FUG

I know....I need a good light.
</a>" />

Not really a budget build (a little over $2k with the stamp and optic), but I would rather have this than 2 or 3 basic ARs.

I can't say this is the best.  I think I put together a very nice rifle for my needs and budget.  It has some extra goodies like Spikes enhanced lpk and Spikes nickel boron coated bcg.   Aimpoint comp m4 and Surefire M920V lightt.  BCM 16" BFH upper.  Sprinco spring kit.  Troy triangle flip up rear sight.  I am happy with it.

If I had to pick just one I'd go with a very accurate 16" middy.  Probably a LaRue OBR 5.56 since they come with a good trigger already installed, but I'd substitute a Noveske Recon (without the VIS) with either rifle sporting a TA31A ACOG in a LaRue mount.  If I had to pick one of the ones that I own it would be the first AR that I built myself.  It's an LAR Grizzly lower with an LMT parts kit and LMT 2 stage trigger, Magpul ACS stock and MOE grip.  The upper is a Vltor MUR, with a Noveske Afghan 14.5" barrel and a Troy 10" free float rail.  It's got a BlueForce sling, a Surefire light in a LaRue mount, Troy flip up sights and a GG&G vfg.  I alternate between an EOTech 516 on a LaRue QD mount and a Leuopold VX2 1x4 scope in a LaRue QD mount.

My "all around" setup would be:

Spike's tactical Zombie lower (cool factor)
Spike's enhanced LPK (battle trigger ftw)
BCM midlength upper
BCM BCG
BCM Gunfighter
Magpul CTR
DD Omega/Lite 9" rail
PMags
Battlecomp
Troy BUIS
1-4x variable sight (Brand depends on price range)
Surefire light (Again, model depends on price range)

This set up would have me pretty much golden for whatever I needed to do. The 1-4x scope could be used tactically, as well as to give a bit of magnification for hunting. I would have the rail if I needed to attach a bipod, and the Spike's Battle trigger in my enhanced LPK would allow a nice trigger pull as well as a durable long lasting trigger.

If we are talking tactical instead of survival than it would have to be "Ol Betsy" on the bottom.

Hunting, defense, varmint, entry, 3 gun, cambat, civie, leo, mil, can all be combined. Longer ranges ("sniping") would suggest an optic preferably 4x or greater. Overall IMHO would be 14.5" with a good bbl and optic. Of course you would need quality components on the rest of the rifle to be sincere. This is just my opinion.

Spikes midlength LE rifle (price)
Free float forend (I like my JP modular)
Optics are impossible to recommend. I did not like the ACOG, EOTech, Reflex II or Aimpoint M2 I've owned but am satisfied with the T-1. I'm not a magnified scope person but I did have a Leupold VXI on my 6.8 and it did its job.
Add a 2 point sling and light

That would be MY all around budget setup.

For general use I'd want something lightweight, short, with a light for use in the dark, with backup sights since it's always a good idea to have a plan B, a good optic like a T1, and a suppressor because sometimes it's good to be quiet. I'd use a lightweight modular stock with a QD point on it. I'd run a QD socket on the handguard as well, so I could use a VTAC padded sling with QD mounts front and rear.

Oh, look! I built it...

This. I hate this cookie cutter answer just as much as "the gun was more accurate than I am".

The OP stated he wanted the best "all around" AR-15 which always translates to range gun that won't be condemned by the gun snobs on this forum.

Either of these would do nicely, for "all around" purposes.
I would include a good trigger, and a good sling, a nice charging handle, and some reliability enhancements (like a good BCG) also.

Yeah the question is kinda lacking.  Its fine but a little more would help.   A better one might be I  have $2000 to spend on a good all around ar-15 and that must include light, optic, sling, ect.  I will provide the 10 mags and 2000 rounds of ammo on top of that.    Most would agree on a 16" probably.  The brand could be narrowed down based on price and what is currently out there and stuff.  There would be different opinions and of course.

Carbine with a RDS of some sort, QD or tip-off 3x magnifier if you live in Kansas, and a light. That will cover all you need.

So you contributed what? You are a cookie cutter. I already gave my opinion on the SUBJECT.

Well since this is a simple question, I would have to say that my Spikes/DD middy would fit the bill.
Spikes complete lower
DD 14.5 middy
Diamondhead folding rear sight.
YHM FH
Pretty simple and its a shooter

My .02...

- 16" mid-length upper
- Adjustable stock rather than an A2
- BUIS
- Reliable light (surefire etc..)
- Sling
- Aimpoint or Eotech
- FTS Magnifier (LaRue mount)

In regards to optics I have an Eotech with FTS magnifier on one AR and a Nightforce 1x4 on the other. While I really like the Eotech, had it for 5yrs, I am beginning to think the 1x4 scope option is damn near perfect. In either case, do what works best for you. Regardless, post pics once you get your all around setup complete

For me, I went with a rock river m4 clone.  Rock river two stage nm trigger, magpul miad grip, vltor stock, troy buis for the front and rear, surefire g2 in a vltor qd mount, troy 10 inch free floated rail, tango down battle grip, leupold mark 4 1.5x5 optic with a larue qd mount and a vickers two point sling.  I wish I would have went with a lighter rail though.  And I switched from ladder rail covers to magpul xtms which I like better.

IMO a recceish gun, anywhere from 12.5-16" depending on your environment, with a variable low powered scope, acog, or RDS with a flip magnifier.  This gives you a gun very capable from indoor ranges out to 500-700 yards depending on bbl length an ammo.  Magnification gives you much better target ID and scoped offer BDC and windage adjustment other than the Kentuky variety.

"all around" indicates long range, your gonna want a match grade barrel... and thats useless withough match ammo.  Both of these will extend the "practical" range of your gun.  If the shtf your gonna be shooting animals more than people/zombies.  You want a gun capable of putting a bullet through the vitals in one shot.  A silencer will also help.  If an animal cant tell where the shot came from, they probably wont run away, they will run somewhere.  It may be away, it may be towards you depending on how the sound reflects.

And you have to train all around.  A well trained(all around) person with a stock m4 will be much better all around than someone untrained, out of shape, person with the sickest gear.

Mine would be setup exactly like my current carbine.

14.5" carbine w/ vltor modstock, vcas sling, IWC light mount with G2, lt150 larue mount with 2moa aimpoint, dd a1.5" buis. I can keep an extra aimpoint battery in the mount + extra 123s in my stock.

16 inch 68 middy gas with a rifle length rail I would run a FSB Geissel trigger and probably a 4x Acog or a 1-4/1-6/ or a new 1.1-8x.....
