if a barrel is 18 inches and has a mid length gas system, what size rail do I need or would need? 10 inch or longer?

I went with a 13", but I  think a 15" would be fine.

If you want the gas block covered, yes 10" or longer will work.

Typically, people run 13" or 15" rails on 18" rifles. I have a 15" Geissele SMR MK1 on mine.

Why not get the BCM? I've installed a couple, and they work great, look great, and are very reasonably priced.
