another serial number/date manufactured question

my uncle wanted me to figure out when his colt sp1 was made. he thought it was about 1972 but fromt the serial number it seems as if it was made in 79-80
the rifle has the triangle handgaurds,pencil barrel,no reinforcing on the lower, no forward asist, a1 buttstock and grip of course and its a grey color. serial SP85XXX

it tell him 79 but he's quite sure he bought in in 72-73.
what do you guys think?

From the serial # list, it appears that it was manufactured in '79-'80 time frame. I suppose you could call Colt and aske them to make sure, though.

Tell your uncle he's getting old[:D]. My serial no is 10,000 under his, and I got it in 1978. From one who knows, the year memories start getting dimmer and dimmer as you get much past 40
