The length is pretty much the only difference that I know of. As you mentioned I find the shorter length a little bit more comfortable to shoot with particularly when wearing thicker clothing or a chest rig.

All my 20" AR's wear A1 stocks. I'm 6'5" with long monkey arms and I find the shorter stock much more comfortable than the A2. Just feels right.

I'm 6'3" with long arms and feel the same way –– almost all of my fixed-stock ARs have A1-length stocks, be they traditional Colt/Cav, ARFX skeletons, or VLTOR fixed. (The only exceptions being a couple of HB/bipod bench ARs with traditional long glass.) Just my personal preference. |

I find that there is a world of difference between the A1 and A2 length. I scored a Colt CS stock for nothing years ago (A1 length with A2 materials) and haven't looked back.
I highly suggest you look at Cav Arms. I think their A2 style stock is A1 length. - BG |

It is, they call it a "C1" stock and it will accept a std. metal trapdoor buttplate if you don't like the rubber one it comes with. I have several and they are good products IMO.  I don't have a picture handy of an A1/C1 on a 20" rifle (like the OP mentioned), but here are a couple of Dissy-clones I threw together –– both of these are CavArms C1 std. stocks:

A2 is just too long for me. I use a Cav Arms on my all Colt match target.
