My friend is getting ready to buy his first AR. He just found a used but like new (maybe only a couple hundred rounds through it) M&P 15. Is $800 a decent price for it? I told him yes because of the retail price on a new M&P, but I want the consensus view. Thanks.

I just picked up a M&P 15T for $1K and I love it.  It was lightly used also but in perfect condition.  This isn't my first and not my last.  I think that S&W AR's are pretty solid guns and would be a great first AR.  And yes I think 800 for it is a fair price.  He should be pleased.

$1000 will buy a brand new M&P15 with full magpul MOA furniture and you also get 5 free pmags right now, plus you get the warrantee. so no i dont think $800 is a good deal for a used one.

I don't think that's gonna happen. Back to the original question. I appreciate the link though

He didn't specify the model. I'm guessing that it's just a standard M4 style, nothing fancy.  He says that it comes with a retractable stock, which is standard equipment for carbines

We retail the basic M&P15 for about $1035.00, the MOE version runs right at $1000.00. All new M&P15's (chambered in 5.56) come with a 5 free Pmag coupon that you can mail in and redeem through the end of the year. So, no, I agree with the other posters that his money would be better spent going towards a new one. If he cant swing the difference in price right now see if you can find a local store with lay away, or some form of financing for the remainder. If the guy would drop to $750.00 Id go for it though.
