Can someone dig up this statistic.....I wonder if one has been used to commit a crime....I may be wrong to think that there are not many.....

Someone posted a link to a good article on how this thing got through the CA legislature. I apparently didn't bookmark it or save a copy of the article. Anybody know the link I'm referring to? As I remember it, there was some CA legislator who wasn't good at for anything but converting oxygen into carbon dioxide. He had proposed a few lame-brained bills that got shot down, even by his own party. In order to keep him voting the party-line, his fellow Democrats decided to pass the next piece of legislation he proposed. And guess what? It just happened to be a 0.50 cal gun ban. Virtually everyone at the hearing for the bill was shocked that, despite the complete lack of evidence to support his position (i.e., no crimes committed with the weapon), it was clear that it was going to pass. They were throwing this guy a political bone to keep him faithful to the party. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful than that, but that is all I can remember off the top of my head.

CA: Assembly votes to Ban .50 BMG's Associated Press SACRAMENTO – A measure to restrict new sales of a high-powered, long-range rifle that has been portrayed as an ideal sniper weapon cleared the Assembly with ease yesterday...................The .50-caliber BMGs weigh up to 60 pounds and fire rounds up to 6 inches long, according to a legislative analysis. They can hit targets more than a mile away, according to the analysis, and reportedly can penetrate military personnel carriers from 2,000 yards. The Branch Davidian sect had .50-caliber weapons at Waco in 1993, and the guns have been linked to drug cartels, militia groups and terrorists. But, while .50-calibers have been associated with one attack on an armored car in Georgia, they apparently have yet to be involved in a crime in California. [red]"Why that would make us comfortable, I don't know," Koretz said. "The Irish Republican Army has used these to assassinate people. The potential is too great."[/red] The state Attorney General's Office estimates there may be 3,600 such guns in California. John Burtt, chairman of a .50-caliber shooters association, said the group has several thousand past and present members in the state. "We've been shooting these target rifles in competition for over 20 years," Burtt said. "They are just not the weapon of choice for a criminal or they would have been used prior to this." ....................

I think this came up before that the Branch Davidians did NOT have any .50cal stuff. This claim is made because the public has a short memory and is too lazy to verify such claims.
But, while .50-calibers have been associated with one attack on an armored car in Georgia, they apparently have yet to be involved in a crime in California.

This is the first time I've ever heard of this claim. Last I knew NO .50cals have ever been used in the commission of a crime. Several years ago some guy flipped and killed his estranged wife and the responding cop in the Denver area. He had a .50 BMG but used a pistol IIRC. But whatever it was it wasn't the big .50.

Well maybe, just maybe, if these legislators represented their bosses, their constituents, they wouldn't have anything to fear. What a concept!

How about a Billboard which says: [blue]“Ted Kennedy’s Car Has Killed More People Than 50 BMG Owners Have!”[/blue] edited to fix error

As one of our number said, they gradually want to take away our means of defending ourselves against their tyranny and depredations.

If you want to feel ill got to the Violence Policy Center. http://www.vpc.org/snipercrime.htm All the articles are WITHOUT reference material. Plus, like everything the antis do, the articles state the barest "facts" to portray .50 cals in the worst light. I am going to try to contact the GBI, GSP or Chamblee PD to verify the armored car attack. I have no personal memory of it. Does anoyone have the final report about the Waco incident? Weapons found list? THe VPC states the .50 cals were fired at the agents.

shouldn't they ban the gasoline they used to kill themselves instead? that killed way more than guns. i don't think they managed to hit any of the agents that surrounded the compound so how is it that the 50's were the dangerous parts. makes more sense to ban compounds or matches than the guns that didn't hurt anyone. if i'm mistaken i apologize.

We all have got to take a different tack. While common sense & reason is on our side, it is not working. The 1994 AWB has proven that the democRATS can and will strip us of our freedoms based on the weapon's appearance (not crime statistics). Of course this weapon is a major landmark because if it goes it will be a matter of time before the largest caliber handgun you can carry for self defense is a .38 (or .32).

.10 cents a round, eh? That sure is going to make a brick of .22s expensive...

No .50 cals were fired by any of the Branch Davidians. If there had been, they would have destroyed the ATF'er's quickly and easily. There was only a report that the ATF was told they had a ".50 cal machine gun". This was reported on TV over and over by the ATF infochick in their daily briefings. Later, after it was all over, they said they MIGHT have had a Barrett, but it was never fired. The real reason for the raid was suspicion they had machine guns. The "meth lab" thing was an excuse the ATF had to use in order to legally be able to use US Army Choppers and other military support, which otherwise would have been in violation of Posse Comitatus. When their other reasons for the ATF raid started falling apart, the ATF trotted out the "for the children" excuse, stating children were being molested. No one ever showed us where the ATF has jurisdiction in child abuse cases, especially when the state children services (or whatever it is called in TX) had already investigated and found no evidence of any harm to children. That charge came from a custody battle among a couple, one of whom was in the BD group, and child sexual molestation charges is a common custody battle tactic. In preparations for the Congressional investigation on Capitol Hill, congressional investigators showed up in TX to examine the gun evidence. They were accompanied by specialists from Failue Analysis (a noted engineering/forensics firm), to look at the burnt guns from the Branch Davidian location. As soon as FA unpacked their portable X-ray machines in order to look for evidence of auto sears and M16 parts in the partly melted AR15's, the Justice Dept suddenly barred examination of the evidence. No one has looked at the burnt guns since, and no one knows if any had ever been converted to full auto. The real purpose of the raid was that ATF had been in trouble on Capitol Hill over their Nazi tactics. They faced being reigned in by pissed off Congressmen, and possible loss of funding. The whole thing was "Showtime" in order to have a big spash in the media. .50 cal? What .50 cal?

Not true, we can still carry knives with blades up to 4" long.. I proudly carry around my CRKT M16/14M (A) with the blade measuring out at 3.96" long [:D] "Why yes, officer, it's legal.. do you have a ruler?" ---- Edited to add: The $.10/bullet tax was shot down.

I know exactly what they're doing. They ban the "ugly", "useless" guns, (ARs,AKs,MACs), then move to the big ass guns like the BMG or the 500 magnum. What they're doing is trying to get on both sides of the spectrum of guns, and close in on every kind of firearm, sporting or not. And no offense to anyone, but most of the criminals in LA are completly incapable of even operating a 50BMG! I mean, a bipod or a scope?! They'd try to aim it sideways out of their car for God's sake! It's the exact same as drive by stabbing from a bayonet, it's never gonna happen.

Firstly, these antis will try to ban ANYTHING they can, especially if it's an easy target like an 'awful sniper rifle'. However, there's another angle that some may not have considered. The antis/elitists are trying to protect their asses. How? They travel in fancy limos, many of them armored. Generally, they'll withstand .30 cal MG fire, but I haven't heard much about ones that will take .50 BMG fire...they want us unable to take them out. :)

$33 flag says it all: Heres some *very interesting* reading. Its a minority staff "report" (i.e. propanganda along the lines of a 1980's PRAVDA newspaper)for the U.S. House of Representatives. Title: "Suspect organizations and individuals possessing long-range fifty caliber sniper weapons" http://www.house.gov/reform/min/pdfs/pdf_inves/pdf_guns_50_cal_orgs_rep.pdf The PDF file will take awhile to load, be patient. You'll need all the patience you can get after reading the article...[puke]

I can see them now, in their spiffy little offices reading the gun reports "2.3 million saved per year by firearms... 5 killed yesterday" The problem with our side is that we don't have any martyrs! You can always make people mourn the deceased, we dont seem to care about those still alive anymore.
