$50.8M for M4 Carbines

Small business qualifier Colt Defense LLC in Hartford, CT received the full delivery order amount of $50.8 million as part of a firm-fixed-price contract for M4 and M4A1 carbines. The M4 is a modernized form of the M16 rifle used by the US Army. It's designed to accommodate a lot of different attachments, and is sometimes referred to in military-speak as an "M4 modular weapons system".

Work will be performed in Hartford, CT and is expected to be complete by July 30, 2008. This was a sole source contract initiated on Feb. 16, 2007 by the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command in Rock Island, IL (W52H09-04-D-0086).

That is probably about 55-60,000 M4's since the pricing usually inlcudes extra magazines, a maintenance allowance, training, and the ancillary costs associated with getting them delivered.

Depending on the ultimate end user, it could be less (M4's) since some get theirs delivered with KAC RAS, BUIS, etc. and the per-rifle cost would be higher. Same deal with FN. They deliver USMC M16's with KAC M5 rails.

Good for Colt and Great for the soldiers who will get them.

Yes.  As in made smaller and more modular to reflect this century.

Well I suppose, but is it really any more modern than the M16? It's just different, IMO.

It reflects moden doctrine moe accurately.  That is usually a good indicator.  The addition of a rail and adjustable stock is more modern.  The flat top is moe modern. Etc.

It's not quite that nefarious, I assure you.

The M4A1 goes to USASOC.  Everyone else (and even some in USASOC) gets the M4.

My first M4, in the 82d ABN as a Rifle PL, was W009313.  I've had one other M4 and several M4A1's since.

Well, an M16 can have a flat top and railed handguards. I do agree that with today's style of warfare, the M4 may be preferred than the longer M16. I guess I just view the word modernize differently than you.
