I was looking at Model 1 Sales for a barrel and i'm given 2 different options, .223 or 5.56. I was under the impression that they were the same thing... Which one do I want if I plan on shooting surplus AND commercial ammo?

You want the Nato chamber 5.56 this way you can shoot everything.   I would get the 1and 7 barrel so you can shoot those heavier grain rounds...

5.56 NATO has a higher pressure curve than .223 commercial ammo, so get the 5.56 barrel so you'll be able to shoot both.

As far as twist is concerned, if you'd like an accurate rifle, get a twist suited for your needs. If you plan on shooting surplus ammo (55gr/62gr) then 1/9 would be the optimal twist for those rounds. If you want to shoot high power rounds (78gr +/-) and/or tracer rounds you want to consider a 1/7 twist. If you want to shoot lower grain ammo (45gr) then something like a 1/12 would be more optimal for it. Don't get confused with what I say, any twist will shoot any 5.56 ammo, it's just one twist will shoot a certain type of ammo better than another twist.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not familiar with ".223 Wylde" either, what's that about?
As for my twist, I'll probably use this one mostly with surplus rounds or maybe factory seconds so I guess I'll just have to decide. I guess 1/8 might be a good compromise?

1/8 is a nice Varmint twist. Like I said every twist will shoot basically every ammo, you'll get MINOR differences in accuracy. If you think you're going to be shooting mostly surplus, then you're probably going to get 55gr M193 / 62gr M855/SS109. For those two rounds the optimal twist would be 1/9. If you think you're going to be shooting a lot of high power rounds, and maybe tracers in cold weather then 1/7 would be your optimal twist. A lot of commercial ammo is 55gr so if thats mainly what you're going to buy consider a 1/9.

So do Stainless Steel barrels not need to be chrome-lined? Because I'm having difficulty finding a 16" SS barrel in 5.56, midlength gas system, chrome-lined...

AFAIK you can't get a SS barrel with chrome lining.  Generally people use SS barrels if they are building a target rifle, and chrome lining tends to reduce accuracy by a small degree.
