I would like to know what you all think about the state of the 6.8 SPC cartridge. We are over a year and a half since Remington released this round and only a small amount of brass and loaded ammo has been released.

Hornady has said they will be releasing ammo soon, but with lower velocity than what Remington claimed. This loading from Hornady sounds like it is more in line with the velocities that hand loaders are getting.

We see new unfired uppers being offered for sale by individuals who have not been able to get factory ammo. I have to wounder how many of those who have a upper chambered for the 6.8 are actually shooting it.

Is this cartridge dieing on the vine or is it already dead and I just don't know it yet.

Joe

Whats wrong with .223 If you dont like .223, go with another rifle completely.

That's what happens when you give an answer before a question is asked.

There have been many cartridges over the years that did the same, and I'm sure
there will be more......

Unless some .gov ever adopts it fully, it's dead in the water.

Based solely on what I have heard or read second-hand, it seems that the 6.8 is doing a fairly good job overseas. And the reason the ammo is in short supply state-side is because it is in such demand overseas. It seems more and more makers are starting to chamber uppers for it and more and more makers are starting to make caliber correct lowers for it, so they must be thinking popularity will pick up once ammo orders pick up, and that seems to be happening. It took me a bit over a year to score 280 rounds of Remington MKBT ammo and with the situation I am in it may be another year or three before I locate a decent place to shoot at longer than 100 yards, so why waste the ammo on such a short range.
I think it will take off once ammo hits the market. It seems to me to be a very fine round and has a lot to offer in the AR platform.

if you like the 6.8 go with the thompson, if you like .308 go with M1A or FAL or even HK91, if you like 7.62 go with the AK............. but please dont put those calibers in the AR, thats just sacrilege.

to me just something new, would be fun to have but since I use my AR's for killing beer cans and not perps or ROP's, it wouldn't do anything for me on a practical basis.

I bet you really have a fit with the .458 SOCOM, .499 LW, and .50B then don't you?
To each his own but I say the more the merrier!

Chances are it will be a 5.56 or .223 since most of us who even think of SHTF events are not willing to put stock in a cal that is unsuportable in those times. My SHTF guns are 5.56mm, my SBR will have a 6.8 upper, but it's 5.56mm for TEOTWAWKI.

Don't know yet, might be, might not be.

If it is indeed a fact that the military is buying up all the 6.8 that Remington can produce, then why have they not ramped up production to supply the demand. You hear reports that this cartridge has been killed or shelved by the military and that they have canceled any orders for ammo to boot.

I really think that Hornady is the one who will pick up the ball and run with this and they my well be the ones to help it survive.

Joe

The Hornady "white box" 6.8mm SPC is already out there in the hands of guys that are doing the beta testing. Expect it on the shelves soon (possibly by summer's end).

Remington ammo and brass is trickling out of the factory. I used to believe that "it's all going to the military" BS. There is some Remington ammo in the hands of US forces, but it is by no means a quantity that would comsume all of Remington's manufacturing capability. I don't know exactly why they have so resoundingly screwed the pooch on this one, but it looks as though the dam is starting to break.

I'm still getting the ole "any day now" line from Barrett about their very well priced training ammo ($115 for 300 rounds or $250 for 1000 rounds when purchased at wholesale quantity). Some of the guys on the original 6.8mm program at Ft Campbell say that the Barrett ammo is VERY good stuff and gives the Remington Match ammo a run for its money. Hopefully it will be available soon, but Barrett's been telling me 2 to 4 weeks out since February.

I've also heard from people on the original 6.8mm program that we should expect to see loaded 6.8mm ammo from Black Hills, S&B, and Wolf in the not so distant future. These same people say that the 6.8mm program is not as dead as its detractors would have us believe, but only Uncle Sugar really knows.

Myself? I shot about 100 rounds of factory ammo that I got from my local gunshop just this past weekend and have close to 900 rounds that I have loaded myself. The 6.8mm SPC round is a lot of fun to shoot and I plan on taking a whitetail or two with it this season. Hopefully with the Remington Core-lockt factory load, but I'm not holding my breath

I have been shooting mine since December. I have about 1200 round through it. It is a bunch of fun and inspires more confidence than any 5.56. I hope it takes off , but even if it does not I will never regret buying mine -- I love it.

none of the above

The solution to the 5.56 problem is 7.62, not 6.8.

Somewhere between B and C in your poll.

I have the rifle built and have some ammo (and everything to reload for it) but I'd really like some more ammo in hand before I put it through it's paces (and it's not really a high priority for me), so I'm just sitting on it for now...

"Serious" question...IF the 6.8 was just as cheap and available as the 5.56, who would still want the 5.56?
Link Posted: 8/15/2005 1:59:46 PM EDT
If I keep breaking bolts then yes I'd still want 5.56, but If Bolts hold up then I'd take 6.8 anyday.

It was a great idea, but the timing was bad, and it was doomed from the start because of a number of logistical problems it would have created and some serious in-fighting that kept it from being.

You do know that the AR was originally a 7.62x 51mm,hmmm.

I'll be getting an upper and some mags when I see a stable supply of ammo at
a reasonable commercial price.

Who CARES if the Armed Forces use it anyway

It's the only real production upper/rifle that fits in between the 5.56 and the 7.62

Now if someone could make a 7.62 x 51 UPPER that worked on a standard AR Lower ,
I might change my mind.

I'm in the 'bought a stripped upper receiver and set it aside while waiting for brass to be available, recently bought brass from Midway, and am now buying upper parts as the budget allows' category.
Link Posted: 8/15/2005 4:48:21 PM EDT
I"ll think about getting an upper when I start seeing military surplus prices on ammo
Link Posted: 8/15/2005 5:26:07 PM EDT
Other manufacturers are making 6.8mm Remington SPC?
Isn't the cartridge patented by Remington?

I didn't think they could do that for 10 years, after the patents had expired.
Link Posted: 8/15/2005 6:43:05 PM EDT
Saw something similar when the 17 HMR first came out..took over a year before ammo was sufficiently
in the pipeline before it became readily available..and now it is...and prices have come down a bit...

Since this is a high demand cartridge ...it will probably take a little longer...we go into Iran...
it will probably take even longer...

C'est la guerre

Remington was only one of the companies involved in development of the cartridge, after it was initially wildcatted by modifying the .30 Remington casing.

There's a rifle very similar to this called the AR-10.

Or are you talking about a .308 Shrike or some other belt-fed abomination?

I'll buy a 6.8 upper if I can ever get a 5-gallon bucket of once-fired brass.

Then you will be waiting a very long time. Like until hell freezes over.
What you want is impossible, unless you want a single shot rifle.
The .308 and 7.62x51mm cartridge will not fit in the magwell for a standard AR15/M16 .223/5.56mm lower. It is too long.

You would have to go with an AR10/LR308/SR25 based rifle, and these already exist.

So your statement really does not make any sense.

I 've put together three, two 20" s and one 16" never had a problem with ammo because I reload my own. Just bought brass when it was available and got about 2500 rounds so far. Two victims, one coyote and one racoon-- both very dead. Loaded 110 V-Max, 110 Barnes X, and 115 hornady HPBT's all are accurate and I love the concept. It's my Idea of a SHTF weapon. I'm still conviced it would be the right upgrade if we stay with AR-15/ M-16 sieries for our military.
