I'm 18 and bought my AR at 17. I got my AK and Beretta 96 at 16 though.

ETA

I've been shooting my entire life pretty much. Started in my dad's lap with a Ruger Bearcat.

i'm going to be turning eighteen and i'm want to buy my first gun that's officialy mine, i'm considering an AR, how cheap can you find a decent base model, i figure i can always upgrade parts later, i've got about four fifty, i could get i little bit more out of savings, is there anything available for that kind of money or should i just go look at AKs
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 3:27:46 PM EST
I bought myself my first and so far only AR-15 a week before my high school graduation. A little over two years ago.

There are a couple of threads about this floating around, I suggest you hunt around for used parts in the EE until you can snatch up a good deal and build it yourself.

I'm 22 and I'm on my third AR. Got my first one when I was 20. I got my first rifle when I was 16 (SKS). I've been shooting my whole life.

Well I met him when he was at Gunstock a year ago... he was 17..... so I KNOW he was an AR-15 shooter then.

- edited to say - his pops drinks good beer.

17, and the AR was my second rifle.

On another note, when I turn 18, is there any way to transfer the rifle to my name? (I paid for it!)

You can just take posession, as long as you are in a state that allows p2p sales.

Message to all you 15 year olds. Graduate high school as soon as possible (with high marks), and go to work as soon as your state will allow.

My sons' ages 9,11,13. All Shoot. They are each getting a 22 for christmas ,except the 13 year old will be getting a 17 HMR. They will each be given an AR at graduation! They currently shoot my buddies AR with a collapsible stock as mine is waiting on a new barrel. I used to shoot A LOT untill my youngest one came along. He took a extreme interest in guns and kept trying to break into my cabinet at age 4. The kind with the coca cola style keys. The little rascal learned by watching me open the safe which key to use. I caught him just as he got it open, scared the piss out of me! He has since gotten a little more responsible and I have a different safe without keys!!

Lots of yungins here. Just make sure that college does not turn you into a liberal pansy.

19 here. Just bought my first AR a couple months ago.

Combat_Jack, I can't believe you're only 18! For some reason I had you pinned as a 30+ year old...
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 7:04:23 PM EST
19...been at AR's for almost 3 years now.

Have three of my own so far, and about 12 other assorted firearms.

And no, ISU has not turned me into a liberal pansy. Made me hate liberals even more. You'd be amazed how many conservatives there are on my campus.

Lucky bastard. I go to the University of Colorado in Boulder. It has about as many liberals as Berkeley. It drives me nuts...

Become a ME and designt he next-gen AR!

(Ya, ya, ya, I'm an EE. We don't do gun design stuff - although a personal rail gun would be nice)

Virginia Tech here! Came to college moderate, graduating a right-of-center gun (AR-15 no less) owner!

Hell ya!

20 here, bought my Bushie at 18... my first rifle (Well, that i purchased myself).

I've got a 2nd one in the works (need an upper).

After a bolt 22, the AR is a great first rifle. You learn a lot about taking care of your guns (You need to clean the sonuvabitch) and after you are familiarized with the Stoner rifle system, you can tackle almost anything else in the civilian firearms realm.

Kudos to any youngins that are getting into the hobby. I try to get as many people interested as possible, and you all have a head start on them.

Hmmm....5 years of Engineering college (1 of Co-op out of that) and I still only have my original A2 JT kit gun. Im making money, but its all goin to school debt. Oh well.. the "now" may be slim pickings, but in about 3 years my wife and I both will be school debt free and I can start beggin her to let me spend money I then have on a new AR or 3. hehe.

EDIT Danget...forgot the topic...I didnt get an AR till 22, but my kids, when I have some, will start at about 10 and assuming AR's are legal they'll get their own if they want at 16 or 18
Link Posted: 9/30/2004 9:18:54 PM EST
My son shoots AR's along with me. I have one that was purchased just for him. He's 13. He also shoots Trap/Skeet. We deer hunt, bird hunt, goose hunt and varmint hunt on a regular basis. I think it's very important to teach shooters while they are young. They are so much better off if they stick with it and if not they have experience that may be critical in a sticky situation when they are older.

I'm 17. The bush M4orgery was my third gun after a Belgium Browning .22 and a M1 Garand .308(that was a small leap over a big pond). Since then I've gotten(well my mother's gotten) a Kimber Custom TLE II and a Rem. 700 VS .308. These are the guns I can call "mine". Thanks to a semi-crazy mother, and a grandpa who convinced her shooting was a good idea for a youngin'.

Are you saying that my tactic of just squirting more oil into it isn't working!?!

Nah, I suppose I really do need to clean it. Before the accuracy tests or before the next case of wolf or whatever other ammo I shove through it. Probably XM193, there is a pumpkin shoot, and there will be tannerite. I feel better knowing that I have the extra velocity of XM193.

Ive never heard that getting a higher education would turn someone into a "liberal pussy" before. Im 22 on my second AR(LE6920). Been shooting guns and hunting all of my life.

Many "professors" tend to be liberal, and they use their classrooms as a forum to spout their rhetoric. Unfortunately, a lot of students eat it up.

bought my son one when he 11 and my other son has one @ 5

neither will get them untill they are 18 but shoot them with me all the time.

Im late to the party, got my 1st AR at 45. How ever I did take a 19 year old from work & 2 of his friends out shooting. None of them had ever shot anything bigger than a 22 rimfire before. 2 are confirmed converts, both are saving for their own AR`s.

Yes college tends to turn everyone into liberal girls.

Anyway I got my first AR15 right before Y2k, but I didn't get it because of Y2K. I picked it up the Colt HBar from a family member in need of some cash. I'm soon to be 20 and here is a picture of part of my collection. I didn't see any need for deer rifles or rimfire rifles.

What is the weight of that A-3 in the left corner? Is that a BM pencil barrel?

That is gonna be next build.
