I bought a few boxes of Winchester Q3131, lot number SC-02. The brass is stamped '01 with a NATO cross. I have read about problems people were having with '99 Q3131 (lot number RA-11). I was wondering if this ammo is any good.

This is my first post, I hope it works.

Welcome!

I have fired Q3131 and Q3131A without problems. I may have been lucky on the Q3131 and had good lots, boxes gone now can't tell lots. IIRC, 1999 was the trouble year. Troy will know for sure.

Seems odd. 01 headstamped? Are you sure it was Q3131? I thought the last lots of that part# were 99. Of course it could be. Yes, perhaps Troy will shed some light on this.

The ammunition is definetly Q3131, not Q3131A, and is stamped WCC '01. If it is good stuff then I will buy a bunch more.

I bought the ammunition at my local sporting goods store. I posted a photo above if anyone cares (I just wanted to see if I could actually post a picture)

Where's the '03 headstamps? [:)]

Do any of you guys think this stuff will be OK? I would hate to buy a case and later find out its not as good as Q3131A.

Also why is everyone so curious?

Because domestic production of Q3131 ended in 1999 as far as we all know.  The ammunition should be fine, identical to Q3131A.  Please share any information you have though.  Thank you.

The problem is it is either very good stuff or it's a KB waiting to happen. The last lots of Win LC ammo had over-pressure problems but they had 99 headstamps as far as we know. Federal took over the LC plant and has been producing what they call XM193 since then. The older WCC ammo was top notch stuff. So far no one has any experience with stuff stamped like this. If it is Q3131 part #, produced the same way as the old stuff, it should be very good ammo. We just don't know what to tell you. Were as anxious as you are to find out more about it.

btw: How much did you pay for it?

I searched Winchester's site, and this is all I could find:

Question: What are the difference in specs between the Q3131 and the Q3131A? When will the Q3131A be available?

Answer: The Q3131 and the Q3131A are both loaded to the same specifications. The Q3131A will be available in June 2001.

This is strictly speculation, but perhaps Winchester packaged early Q3131A in boxes they already had on hand for the Q3131 until they used them up, or until new boxes marked Q3131A were ready. The 01 headstamp should indicate Israeli manufacture, & I would trust the headstamp more than the marking (or lack of marking) on the boxes.

The only other possibility I could think of would be some sort of limited run of ammunition for testing or evaluation or some kind of special order....

Lot PF70. Good or bad?

FWIW it was my understanding that Winchester is or was still making Q3131 but for some reason it was only for Export.(Note: Poncho69 and I both purchased ours in Canada)

I have a couple of cases of LotSC61 with "WCC 00" headstamp on it.

Overall, I haven't found the Q3131 to be very accurate. It's not loaded very hot. Quite a few friends have had short stroking problems with their shortie AR(< 14.5").  YMMV :)

Should be just as hot as Q3131A.
