Ought to work, but may need a .500 (ve .460) collar, a $35 part.

Pretty sure my friend frog is right. You will need a collar from M.I. for the barrel.

Thanks guys...the barrel is so damn expensive anyway that I may not be able to justify it.

I actually think I still have a 1/2" OD collar that I machined from a standard 5.56 chamber adaptor.

It may work, but if you check my previous threat on M1S and their accuracy standards (1.5" at 25 yards), you might decide that your money is better spent elsewhere.

There are probably certain things I would still buy from M1S, but NOT their .22lr barrels. That was a $600+ lesson that I hope nobody else here has to learn.

Good to know.

I had a DPMS bull barrel upper on order, until I found out they were out of stock indefinetly. I cancelled it to try decide what direction I wanted to go....then 2 days later they filled orders....oh well, I am now thinking about getting a decent barrel.

For the time being, I set up one of my dedicated .22 guns that has a standard CMMG barrel with a free float and a decent scope and I plan to see what it can do. I have 2 of the CMMG M4 ish style barrels and I will see if one shoots any better then the other.....if I can get 1/2" at 50 yards with decent ammo, that is all I want.

I shot this 10 shot group with my 20" CMMG upper with stock USGI open sights. I was shooting prone with a leather match sling. The ammo was CCI Blazer bulk pack.

The two pulled shots are undoubtedly my fault. The gun will probably put them all into the 10 ring if I set it up with optics and a rest. When it warms up out, I'll go give it another try with Wolf MT, right now its so cold that the lube on the bullets gets so thick that is causes functioning issues.

That is very nice.

Does the 20" dedicated .22 CMMG barrel stick out of the receiver the same amount as, say, a 18 1/2" 5.56 barrel? Kind of like how my 16" dedicated .22 CMMG barrel looks more like a 14.5" barrel due to the depth that the barrel goes into the receiver.
Link Posted: 1/5/2012 4:09:46 PM EDT
The 20" barrel is NOT like the 16" barrel. Its overall length is greater than 20".
Link Posted: 1/5/2012 4:27:25 PM EDT
Unless something has changed that I'm not aware of, the 20" has the same 1.5" inside the receiver that the rest of the .22 barrels have. So that would give you 18.5" out side the receiver. Mine is.

OK...now who the hell do I believe

If it is still a 20" OAL barrel, the disctance for the handguards has to be the same....obviously, so the distance from the FSB (Or the area machined for the FSB) to the tip of the muzzle must be shorter on the .22 barrel? Can I get a measurement on the .22 and one for a 5.56 standard 20" barrel?

That way we will know for sure.

By the way.....I am hoping Shadowcop's answer is correct, because that is what I want

I just went and compared my 20" service rifle upper with both my M1S and CMMG 20" uppers. The .22lr uppers are both shorter than the 5.56 upper by 1 - 1.5". I didn't have a tape measure handy so I laid them side by side and eyeballed them.

Good to know.........thank you for the help.

I may just buy one and see what luck I have. If yours does that with Blazer ammo and irons.....I should be pleased with a scope and match ammo. Although you are probably a much better shot than I am

$320 for that barrel and a $35 collar to use it. That's $355 just to get the barrel into your receiver. That sure makes one expensive upper by the time you are done!
Link Posted: 1/6/2012 4:19:11 AM EDT
Agreed....I will not be paying that.

I am now thinking seriously about the 20" CMMG barrel.
Link Posted: 1/6/2012 1:22:55 PM EDT
Remember the M1S accuracy standard, if it shoots into 1.5" @ 25 yards it ships. That's about right for what I was getting, around 3" at 50 yards with decent ammo.

My nice group was shot with the CMMG barrel. Once I get my hooded match rear sight I'll take it out again and see if I can shrink that down some.
