Usually the reason is they don't wanna tear up their indoor range.  Outdoor range SHOULDN'T be a problem.

Justice, I have run into the same issue.

Even most outdoor ranges. Most quote city ordinances are the reason, but I don't buy that because I checked. I think they just don't want to degrade their earth berm as fast. Or they say "too much richochet". I don't buy that either, for an outdoor range.

There are two ranges that currently allow FMJ and military Ball ammo, although not SS-109 of course.

Collin County range in Mckinney on Hwy 380:

and Targetmasters on Jupiter which is an indoor range (50 meters) but allows FMJ with rifle, go figure: http://www.targetmasters.com/

My take: Collin County range is OK but hours suck and they are very crowded on weekends, the benches are not that stable, can't do standing or prone (only benchrest). They are a 100M range) ARs are welcome, double tap is OK)

Targetmasters is so damn dark in their lanes I couldn't even see my sights, good for night vision or pistol. You might do OK with a red dot. The muzzle blast is deafening as it is tightly partitioned off. 50 meters only, Rapid fire OK as long as they are aimed shots, AR15s are welcome.

I usually end up going to GPSR in Garland http://epsr.home.texas.net/gpsr.htm because they are open and spacious, usually good rangemaster (don't like to get shot by a noob not paying attention) you can do shotgun, rifle and pistol without paying extra and can do standing, kneeling, bench and sometimes prone if there is not a crowd, which there isn't except hunting season when every Tom, Dick and Harry is sighting his scope in. Downside, no FMJ (and they do check your ammo).

I intend to check out Terrell rifle and pistol club sometime http://www.tr-pc.com, they are a 400M range I believe, and and OCMP/DCM host as well.

That's about it for my experience with rifle ranges in DFW area.

Thats one reason I will never move back to the DFW area.  Well at least you have an indoor range you can rent full auto MP5s.  We dont have that in Houston.
