Bushmaster Modular Carbine

Why isn't this rifle more popular?  I have never seen one at the range, and I don't see them talked about on the boards.  This seems like a pretty sweet setup flat top with a fluted barrel...  I'm thinking of getting one...

Am I missing something?

Its not a bad set up but it uses alot of YHM products and you could buy the S&W AR set up with the same suff but they use troy witch is just a little better.

because it is a 1300 dollar rifle that can be built for about 800 bucks or less.

I have one:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess...  The Bushmaster Modular Carbine is a good choice if you don't have the time and/or inclination to build up a similar rifle from component parts.  I like mine, shoots like a dream...  here it is, EOTECH 552 mounted, along with some of its brethren:

Can you really build one for less than $800?  I tried to peice together the parts from Del-Ton and ended up at around $1100.  For the $100 difference I would rather have the fluted barrel and have Bushmaster put it together for me.

Looks pretty good to me too AustinPSD!  Nice family you have there!  All except that ugly step sister at the bottom...

ya if you can realy build one for 800 or even under 900 for that matter i would be GREATFUL if you kid give me the list of parts! im going to build my first but i want a recomended list of parts. i just want a good carbine with a quad rail and a good BUIS. THATS IT! so if some could give me a list of cheap(in price) parts that would be freakin AWSOME. post here and then email me at [email protected], GunboyG3 is also my AIM/AOL screenname

Or that for $1300 you ca build one that's much better.

I think you would be hard pressed to build that same rifle for $800. Maybe used parts off of the EE.

All the reasons list above plus I don't care for the "clamp on" front site. Reminds me of the shaft collars we use at work that always seem to come loose. They could have used a rail mounted front sight on a railed gas block in my opinion.

The Modular Carbine has terrible sights, rail and the barrel is way too heavy.  When you consider that I could get an LE6920 and put a Larue rail on it for slightly more, the choice gets made rather easily.

I have about 400 rounds over the course of 1.5 days with this particular rifle.

I'm looking at building a carbine like that one as well.  I'd also like to know how to build one for $800.  I already have the lower build.  I need an upper with 16" fluted barrel, quad rail, and buis...

Let's see what we can do.

Stag complete lower for $225
Stag complete upper w/ BUIS $515
YHM Freefloat tube $95
$835 total.  Sell the handguards for $25 and you're down to $810, but the BUIS is better than the "BMAS" one.

Or, for $1300 you can buy a Colt 6520, change out the upper (price wash), and buy a  Larue Tactical rail for$247 and a Troy BUIS for $140 and you have a MUCH better rifle for only $100 more.

its the rifle i shoot the most

I got it( reasonably) cheap when a supplier was blowing them out
the rear sight sux though i put a wilson combat one on mine  and some KAC panels instead of the crappy YHM rubber ones

it shoots well and i cannot bitch except it was supposed to have a  6 pos stock and it came with a a ace

i sold the ACE on here to a guy and put a mag pul on it

overall i like it , but it is pricey if you pay full price  for what ya get

i bought mine for about $1000 new. You cannot exactly put together the same rifle for less. hell even mp-15 are selling for 1700.

If you can build one, then go right ahead, at least bushmaster will fix mine if something goes wrong with it.
Mine goes to work with me, i could care less about the sights if they are hard to flip down, which mine are not. mine are not sharp by any means, but if they are sharp, i guess when i run out of ammo i can just cut the BG with them.he
Plus it is a great entry level ar with what people want. Because if you figure the cost of tools, and parts you won't get close to that price for first time black rifle users.

but what ever to each his own. But i like and enjoy mine, even moreso than the ones I have built myself.

1st off they are popular.
Many people have them and like them a lot. Like Me.
I am not out to offend or ridicule anyone here but just to present facts and truth.

You can assemble one for less if you do not include the price of the required tools and time it takes to assemble one. I am tired of the so called builders who are nothing more than assemblers on this site bashing the stuff that’s not home assembled. Putting together firearms is not for everyone and buying a complete factory weapon of your choice is fine. Most, not all of the assemblers think they are expert gunsmiths because they assembled a rifle or two. But lets face facts they are not gunsmiths they are purely assemblers. Yes there is some learning required to assemble an AR! It should not be to shocking to find out that it requires some smarts and mechanical ability to assemble a weapon.

The added benefit of assembling one is you only buy tools once and from that point you can do unlimited stuff to the AR weapons platform. But know that the (proper) tooling will set you back around $200.00 This has to be included in the overall cost of the weapon.

The fact is if you want to assemble more than one AR and own the tooling to do so then yes you can build the (fifth) one cheaper with better made components. But make no mistake there is another price to pay called the learning curve. This means you will most likely damage a part or two and maybe do something wrong that makes the weapon malfunction within the first few builds etc. Most people have a tendency to not include the cost of learning when they give out the so called facts of it is cheaper and better this way. Until you have assembled several functional weapons and have the humility to admit how much that first cool homebuilt really cost you, only then can you bash the factory ones based on the price alone.  As we know the factories make mistakes all the time and we here complain to know end about that and they build thousands everyday.

For the gun enthusiast the factory Modular Carbine is the next best thing to sliced bread.
You buy it add a Optic, light and a vertical fore grip, or bi-pod to the rail take it out and shoot the hell out of it and be happy for the rest of your ownership it is a great weapon with a warranty.

As for the hobbyist? well assemble away with all the fun and enjoyment that aspect can bring to the table. Take the weapon to the range and show off your pride and joy, you have pride of ownership of a weapon assembled exactly to your specification and smile. You deserve the recognition you paid for it both in time and money.

No kidding!

FWIW, I have one.  It is among my five ARs, three of which I build from stripped upper and lower receivers.  I wanted another AR for my little bro to shoot in matches with me, sort of "tricked out", but didn't really feel like putting one together.  I saw one of these very lightly used at the local gunshop for $950, so I slapped down the money.  Sure, I could have built for cheaper, but I don't mind spending an extra hundred to get the quick fix.

I'd say quick fix is the only reason people get them.  The quote above is a prime example.

Next, in general (not pointing at anyone here, since most here are quite knowledgable) the majority of people neither have the ability nor the drive to build their own carbine with all the doo-dads they want on them.  That is who this is marketed after, mainly (IMHO).  People see rails, flip up sights and flutes and think "damn, that's cool manng."

Personally, I would never purchase that carbine.  After owning BM, I have no desire to own more.  I detest 1/9.  I dislike YHM-they make an adequete and functional product, but I would not spend my own money on their products-aside from their Phantoms.  I detest non-mil spec receiver extensions.  I prefer 14.5in barrels to the 16in.

Does that make me a snob?  Maybe, but it's my money to spend as I choose.  Do I poke fun of owners of that particular carbine or think negatively of them?  Of course not.  That carbine fills a niche, and since it doesn't suite my desires in a carbine, I don't own one.

All that being said, it is a quality product, that would undoubtedly serve most users more than adequetely.

I'd wager that alot of the purchases are based on ignorance as well.  Ignorance of the market, ignorance of the real value of the package, and ignorance of the sub-standard quality of alot of the parts.  I'd also wager that it's that exact ignorance that Bushmaster hopes to tap into with this carbine.

somebody already listed the parts so yeah, it can be done....

$200 for tools! I don't think so!
$20 for used action block and $25 for the wrench. That's it. If you don't already have a vise then add that in too. You don't need anything else....
And I'm sure I'm not in the minority when I say I didn't break anything doing my 1st or 2nd build and both weapons have functioned flawlessly. I will agree that it is more assembling than building which makes it that much easier to do...

In my opinion, its target market is the newbie gun owner, not the gun "hobbyist."

It is much like myself when I am going to purchase a new motorcycle.  I don't want to invest the time and energy in researching all the different parts and accessories that are compatible with a particular bike, and I DO NOT want to be the one tinkering with the mechanical aspects.  I just want to RIDE the bike, not work on it.  I will want hard bags, lots of chrome, and nice wheels.  Sure, I could buy a base model and add all these parts for less (probably) than buying a bike that already has all these parts included, but I won't.  About as much as I want to do is to strap on a fork bag.

Don't knock me for spending my money on what I want, and I won't knock you for doing the same.

In my opinion, that rifle rocks!  It's kinda like the AR that a new member was asking about its worth the other day.  The one with every ARMS product you could think of, Surefire M900, Aimpoint, etc...  Sure, it's nice, but it's not my taste.  Since I AM a hobbyist, I will put my own together JUST like I want it.

For $100 more you could build a 14.5" SBR M4 (with tax stamp) w/ Superior Arms pictogram lower, Del Ton 14.5" M4 kit, Aimpoint M2, Midwest Industries 2 piece rail system, and QRP mount.
