Which is the better way for removing the barrel nut and barrel off an AR15 upper? Should I use an action block, or simply use a set of barrel vise jaws? I guess the easiest way of asking is, is it better to lock the upper or the barrel down to remove the barrel nut? Does it really make a difference?

I have always been told/used an action block.

Hack Saw?

In my LIMITED experience the action jaws are the way to go.

Both worked fine for me, I used barrel locks originally, but I found a used action block for $25 and I think it's a better the right tool for the job.

As an auto mechanic I tend to try different tools until I find one I really like. When it comes to R&R AR barrels, the action block is an excellent choice.

You dont need no stinking vise blocks... All you need is Oxy-acetylene, just make sure you get the mixture right and you'll have it off in seconds...

Action block.

We had a upper twist over the index pin on the barrel once with barrel vise jaws. It was your worst nightmare. Only use the barrel blocks.

+1 on the Action Block, plus I've always marred the barrel using a barrel vise.
