Id go 20" on a rifle-length.

I voted before I read the thread.

I voted 14.5" Midlength but a 16" midlength would be preferred in this situation.

20". Softest shooting, and longest sight radius. Also the longer barrel puts more room between me and what I'd be bayonetting.

I can easily hit a zombie sized target at 250 yards with my iron sighted 16'' mid.

This was my logic too. Also since we are talking Zombies here, the farther out i can start picking them off, the better.

I have two 16" middys, one irons only, the other has a compact aimpoint.  I can hit a 14" diameter steel plate at 300 yards all day long, kneeling.

Good enough for me, ymmv.

+1.  250 yards really isn't that far.  I would go either 16" or 14.5" middy.  Although I would be tempted by a 11.5" carbine as well.

I'd like to say 20" for the increased sight radius, less wear and tear, etc, but there will be much more 16" carbine length "pick ups" for parts than there would be 20"'s these days.  Actually 14.5" wouldn't be bad either considering that ATF wouldn't be around to bother anyone.

Yeah, I figured hitting the head specifically about once every 2-4 shots.  Not that a 20'' AR with irons would turn me into a sniper all of the sudden.

The Proven M4

250 yard max I would go 11.5

Remember, zombies are not real!

At least SHTF has a 1% chance of actually happening some day.

I'd run my 11.5".

Much more maneuverable in urban settings, clearing houses and can still go out to 500 yards fairly easy.

Now, if you had specified "match-grade 14.5" mid-gas stainless barrel" well.....

I think I would take a 16'' middy with a 1-4x optic and front/rear BUIS. I was going to vote 14.5'' CAR since that is what I have ATM, but if I had a choice I think I would do 16'' middy.

After you clear a few houses with an 11.5'' you won't have to worry about hearing the zombies anymore

Bingo

I find my 14.5 M4 kinda long for inside house
Tele must be closed all the way 30.5 inches

10.5 inch SBR.
Zombies don't care about terminal ballistics.
If they are 300yds out, they can't get me, so no need wasting ammo on them.

14.5 inch carbine for all non-zombie related SHTF scenarios

My 11.5" SBR with YHM Phantom suppressor is barely an inch longer than an unsuppressed 16" carbine.  Therefore, I'll take my 11.5" SBR with the can.

Go SBR or Go Home.....................

   11.5" plus my can.

I shoot at a 400yd range all the time. Never noticed any increased accuracy using 14.5" or 16" weapons.

16" Middy (for me best trade-off between velocity/handling), quick release 1x4 viper (w/spare batteries), BUIS front/back, magpul UBR or equivalent, DD 12" rail, one of those mag clips so I can have 2 mags at once (for zombies, I've seen too many people overrun by running out of ammo), a Great rail-mounted flashlight/laser (w/spare batteries), and maybe a short front grip, & a decent quick-release sling.  Oh, and a 1911 .45 for when they get too close, and don't forget to save a round for yourself

Having several choices to pick from,  From the 20 in, to a dressed M4 with an acog reflex. For some reason I tend to lean toward my plain jane 16in M4gery. With just iron sites.
Easy to handle for an EDC, ranch rifle, in and out of tight spaces. I like a K.I.S.S. for a B.O. SHTF rifle.
