I want to build another AR, but a simple, lightweight carbine. Are there any manufacturers outh there offering a new upper, preferably complete, in such a style?

There are some on gunbroker right now in the $70.00 price range that are takeoffs. Just type in "SP-1" in the search box.

Check Del-Ton, in the industry section, I know they offer it in a kit form.

DPMS, The ones Fulton sells are also DPMS.

You can find X Air Force M16 ones too but condition & color will vary.

The DPMS ones are pricey but they do match the current lower black color.

Sweet. I really like the look of a slick-side upper. I think I may have to get one with a case deflector, being a lefty and all. Can you shoot a slick-side left handed without eating gas or brass, or will you put an eye out just like momma said I would?

I had an SP1 20 yrs ago and we would occasionally shoot left handed without problems.

But with the new slicksided carbine I built this winter a friend was being hit in with ejecting brass. But I was using the lower powered Wolf ammo that wasn't available way back when.

I would say if you stuck with full power ammo you probably wouldn't have a problem. If you think you want to shoot Wolf or surplus from other countries you likely will.

The trick for lefties who want to shoot slick side, is to replace the extractor spring with Wolff Springs HD extractor springs. This will change the angle of ejection to a more nearly sideways angle. In fact, with my M4gery, that does have the hump, the empties just barely touch the hump at the very edge of the tip. With my M16 and M16A1 clones the empties come out sideways w/nothing anywhere near my head.
