I have a Hon locking cabinet with reinforced steel shelves for ammo storage. There is just a teensy weensy bit of overflow that needs to stored in my reloading room, though...
 Area is a dehumidified basement, cool and dry year round. |

I keep mine in stored in 50 Cal ammo cans with dissacant. I label them using 4 3/4 X 2 3/8 shipping tags. I set up a program in my computer where it accepts this size, I remove the string and I print the contents on the tag. It's very clear and professional looking. I use a very large font for the ammo type and a bit smaller font for the lot, head stamp date, # of cartridges and if they are in stripper or bandoleers. I found most adhesive don't like to stick to the cans so I find this method very acceptable. I run the string through the top handle anchor and let the tag hang over the front of the can. It is very sturdy. I will find out how to post pics this weekend.
To answer you question I keep mine in a walk in closet in my master bedroom, next to the gun safe. One of my sons is a architect and the last time he visited he asked me how much the ammo weighed. I over stocked a bit. He did the math and said I was way over code for lbs per sq foot and I should move some of the ammo to a different location. I have a completely dry finished basement so I put 10 of the cans on a pallet in the basement but I don't like the idea of having a pipe burst etc. with my ammo so close to the basement floor. I might build the pallet up on cinder blocks to add some height. I don't mean to hijack your thread but what do you guys think of the basement idea? Its a dry heated basement. |

It's where I keep my ammo. Heated [to 60F] dry [40-50% humidity] and a solid floor that'll handle the weight. There is no way I could put my ammo upstairs on a wood floor in one location. I weighed it several weeks ago and it weighs a LOT after it was added up. |

Under our bed, under the nightstand and TV table. The wife was pissed when she tried to store stuff under the bed and found all the cases of 5.56 and 7.62X39!!

For awhile I stored ammo in a metal cabinet. But the ammo cans are better as I can grab and go. |

Basment
Mostly in 50 and 30 cal cans, but I have an ammo locker that i use for the rotating stock of ammo. I don't have the room in the safe for the ammo. I'm considering getting another safe just ofr the ammo though. I need to come up with some better organization for my ever expanding ammo collection |

I keep a basic load, x2
 , in the house and readily accessable. Half in mags on my BDS Plate Carrier, the rest in a 5.56mm ammo can on strippers. I keep a lot of .45acp inside as well, and a grip of .12 #00 to feed the other beasts. The rest of the bulk ammo is in .50 Cal ammo cans and 20 mike mike cans on shelves in the heated garage. I do try to keep them close enough to throw through a door to the outside incase of a fire. I surely do not want all that burning up/cooking off, so I try and plan mulitple contingencies out to fit the occasion....

A safe in the garage, a safe in by the mud room, and a safe in my bedroom. I have 2K rounds in the bedroom. If I'm lucky, it will only see use at the range.

Not in the attic! I don't leave mine in the garage if I can avoid it either, because the temperature variations I can experience in a single day are not good for storing much of anything there. I do store empty brass in sealed containers in the garage. My loaded ammo is in GI cans indoors, and not near the safe. I have a limited amount of ammunition IN the safe, but I certainly don't want anyone to be able to yank both my safe AND the quantity of ammo I have on hand, so I store the bulk of the ammunition somewhere else.

I keep most of mine in the cellar. About 25-30 USGI ammo cans mostly 50cal some 30's labeled and w/ desiccant inside. Keep a few k assorted ammo in the bedroom closet.

After filling the basement with ammo and other gun related stuff my other half got rather upset and said some of the ammo had to go outside. I wasn't worried about theft out of the house so much but the garage was a different story. I was at an auction one day and they sold 2 old chest style deep freezes that they wasn't sure worked or not. I gave 5 bucks for both, brought them home and bolted on some pad locks and filled them up with all sorts of things (mainly ammo of all kinds). They are very easy to put golden rods in and would take a tractor loader to move while they are full. I thought they were sure cheap safes.

The trick to a happy marriage is never letting your spouse see all your ammo at one time in one place. My wife saw that a few times and just shook her head. She's very understanding. I am a lucky man. Now I gotta go hide some ammo!

Umm, you been in my basement? Mine looks an awful lot like yours. But you have a bit of catching up to do.  The wife knows how much I HAVE, but not how much I SPENT. Pretty sad when you go to a show and drive home with a pickup load of ammo cans and still run out of them before you are done with ammo packing. I will never, EVER, not keep my ammo sorted by caliber again. What a PITA that was. Not to mention finding out I had 5 cans full of .454 casull ammo.
