Quoted: I looked in my manual, and it looks like for the Carbine you should mount the foregrip to the end of the rail.

Its just a picture to show that it goes on the bottom rail. One of the largest benefits of the VFG is that you can position the unit so that your arms can be braced against your body for support. If you have ever kept your weapon up on target for 5 minutes in a standing postion, you will understand what the difference is. A supported/ braced position is much easier to sustain.
As humans we tend to conduct most of our movement in closer to our bodies. We don't eat, or write with our arms outstretched all the way, we shouldn't be doing reloads or other weapon tasks that way either.
There is a block of instruction on body mechanics and weapon interaction that explains it a little better, but hopefully you get the idea.
