I want to buy some OD green ladder rail panels, but Midway wants $10 per panel and Magpul wants $12.

Does anyone else know of a cheaper source?  I kind of think $40 for $0.50 worth of rubber is stupid.

Ladders are insanely overpriced.  I couldn't agree more.

I would get some index clips from LaRue.

$5/each

Not sure who makes them.....their FDE wasn't an exact match to Magpl goodies on a buddy's rifle, but you have to look for it to see the difference.

Oh, now that's funny.  $30 for these penny index clips and you think ladder covers at $10 are overpriced?  One 72 count index clip set covers a CAR rail, while 4 Spikes covers covers the same amount at $20, and even at normal price the Larue are not much cheaper and are just as insanely overpriced as any other cover out there.  There is money well saved!  Oh but wait, you get the Larue name on them, and that is worth how much again?

While you won't save a lot on rail covers, if you get your C&R 03 FFL (curio and relic collector's FFL, non dealer) you can get a three pack of DD rail covers for $22 at dealer discount from Midway, or about $7.33 each.  Still not as good as Spikes sale pricing for July but better than the normal full price.  For $30-$35 for three years you can get dealer discounts from all kinds of places even though the items are not C&R related.  Midway, Brownells, Graf & Son, YHM, AIM, and dozens of other places will give C&R holders the dealer discount.  Now there is money well spent.

I went the ebay route once - they were very cheaply made and did not fit the rails well. You get what you pay for ...

One can of index clips covers all 4 sides of a 7" rail for $30.  4 rail covers at Magpul's price are $48.

Where the index clips shine is when you don't have to cut a $12 ladder to fit an accessory laden rail.

Edit: To answer the OP, check the EE. I got a ziploc sized bag of panels and some ladders for $15. Deals are out there. Keep your eyes peeled.

I like LaRue's index clips, I didn't really want to cut a $10+ ladder or cover.  They have many colors and work very well.

One thing to keep in mind when shopping around for deals on ladders/rail panels is that there is a very good reason they are usually kind of pricey. They're made of high temperature-resistant polymers that don't melt with the extreme heat that rifle barrels will give off.

I've seen customers bring in guns that had ladders MELTED to the rails because they thought they could save some money by going airsoft or other cheaper ladders.

So, buyer be warned :)

I used to not like the ladders before I tried them on a YHM diamond FF quad rail. With Magpul XTM rail covers it was like shooting with a football. I got some Ergo ladders for $9.99 locally a few days ago.

It does seem ridiculous for something that simple, but I guess quality is quality, so I pay it.  That being said, I LOVE the LaRue clips.  They don't add any extra diameter to the rail, are completely customizable (no cutting/trimming) and the little wire-retention loops are priceless for a neat installation of pressure pads.  I have 8 tins of them and gettin' ready to order a couple more.
