When you are asked, as I am sure many of you are, which rifle do you think is better, AR vs. AK, what do you say and why?
Link Posted: 5/14/2004 12:32:13 AM EDT
I say "AR Ahkbar!" and kick them in the nuts, what about you guys?

as a desert gun AK's may have a slim advatage in the hands of an uneducated user...  but if you understand the AR platform well, and know its limitations/weaknesses... the AR will stand out a clear winner...

i'm a little biased though

AR.......cause I like them more than AK's.

That's all the reason I need!
Link Posted: 5/14/2004 3:40:08 AM EDT
I own
4 AR-15's
1 AR-10
1 AK-47

I love them all, but the numbers should tell which I say is better.

I like the looks, the feel, the accuracy and the modularity of the AR.

SHTF I grab the M4.  AND the AK as backup.

I tell them to buy both.

No question in my mind, AR all the way.
Link Posted: 5/14/2004 4:25:23 AM EDT
Ihave both.  I like both, so I say get both!
Link Posted: 5/14/2004 4:41:58 AM EDT
I have owned and shot both since the mid 70's. I've had more problems with the AR's than the AK's. My SHTF rifle would be the AK hands down.

Better for what ?

The both are good at some things , and worse at others.

I have to agree with that.  I have only been into the AR's for a little bit and don't own an AK but I have read a LOT about the weapons systems and think the AK is a much better rifle for dirty, grungy, wet, sandy types of areas where cleaning might be high on any ones proiorty list.  But just to point out the AK's biggest weak point from what I can tell is the accuracy due to the loose tolerances.  I was at the local gun shop and I saw the funniest thing, an AK with a "Match" barrel  They aren't very good for precision cutting but they are more of a Axe, were the AR is a medical grade scalpel.  Just my .2c

Look at what the elite of the world chose

Fill in the blanks for me, cause I dont think the elite of the world run around with AKs much.

Link Posted: 5/14/2004 7:54:47 AM EDT
It really does depend on what you are going to do with it.  I'm sure a lot of us have seen the videos of AK being thrown in mud and filled with sand and still fire.    That's fine and important, but if I am in flat open country, I would probably want something that is accurate at extended range over if it will work or not if I fill the action  the action with sand.

I have both, I don't plan on getting rid if either type because either one beats the hell out of throwing rocks.

I own both but would choose the AR because I have more mags and ammo for the AR.
Link Posted: 5/14/2004 8:51:55 AM EDT
I'd  have to pick  my AR, hands down, as far as AK, you can  fill  them up  with sand and it might  go bang. But, other than  that, what  is a AK  good for?

The AR is definitely the best for a trained expert out of the choices given.
The AK is world reknowned for reliability but lacks accuracy.
For reliability and good accuracy over longer ranges I would pick my FAL over the above however.
Like others have stated get at least one of each and see which one you perform best with.

I think I would pick an AR but would be more than OK if my only choice were an AK.

Have you seen this?

Or this,

I say R.O.C.

But they are gonna have to wait for a little bit before they can.

Link Posted: 5/14/2004 11:31:55 AM EDT
They're operationally synonymous to me. Most combat occurs  under 100 meters; MOA accuracy counts for very little at that range. To me, reliability is key, which usually means a nod to the AK, but my AR's been 100%.

You'd be insane to say that one is completely superior to the other; after all, they are both extremely popular. I'd call them the same, but the AR's definitely got more toys to add.

That's a good question.

I like ARs better, hands down. They can be set up soooo many different ways. You can set them up with many different sight options...even multiple sights. You can set them up for different size users. Even different calibers....etc. Most of mine anyway shoot almost 100%....

AK (noticed I said almost 100% when talking about my ARs) the few AKs I've owned will shoot perfectly reliable with any type of mag and with any type of ammo.

If I had to have 1 gun to completely stake my life on....I may have to go AK....as long as I didn't have to hit anything repeatidly and anything over 50-100 yards.

My $0.02

Do you have to be a genius in order to operate an AR-15? I think not. The fact is, the Russians like simplicity, reliability, and ease of manufacture. The Aks record speaks for itself.

I own both, enjoy both. Each has their merits.

If I just want a rifle to just screw around with and not worry about accuracy, Ak.  Most situations, AR.
Link Posted: 5/14/2004 2:11:17 PM EDT
yea  lumpy but a lot of SF's type carry the ak, is due to resupply of ammo some simply carries because they are tought to fight with many different weapons, and to pick up an ak and use it would just gives them more firepower and ammo resupply. and maybe there misson would call to blend in, and not be as noticable, in more secret type of ops there conducting. helps make them more flexable.

make one more point though every time I hear about the dead eather in Iraq I and II, plus vietnam, and somolia I hear we lose 10 soldier's to there 1000 + more troops that all are weilding AKs makes me think that training and unit coheasion in battle that makes the soldier what he his, not what he has just like the HK guys push the XM8 to make me belieave, oh yea shure the AK can take a nuclear blast
and keep of fireing.  now since the fighting is mainly urban the AR really shines.

I like the AR15 because it is AMERICA'S rifle!!!  It looks better....It's an awesome weapon and it is what I shot in the military...Air Force.   I've shot many AK's and everytime I shoot them, I come away with the feeling of  "Nice , but what a clunker".  The AR is so smooth. I've thought about getting an AK but just can't seem to push myself to spend the money.
I own an SKS and it, to me , is better than an AK.  Doesn't seem like a "clunker".

When someone asks me, "AR or AK?" I reply that I'll take Alaska over Arkansas any day.

Hell, asking that question here is like asking, "Bush or Kerry" on moveon.org...

The Fin's have stocked both types of weapons so that they could use NATO or ComBlock ammo in the time of war.

Also, a few SF units of the IDF still use the AK.

"The AK47 was also much favorable by the IDF elite units since it was a deniable weapon,
thus ideal for covert insertions in which deniability is mandatory."

"in Shayetet 13 the AK47 is the standard issue primary weapon on an every man basis.
Like all other AK47 in the IDF, S'13 AK47 are all captured weapons. S'13 used the fixed stock version of the AK47."

I say "who gives a shit, one will kill your ass just as dead as the other and I have both" ...lol...

I could never buy an AK, simply because growing up it was "the weapon of the enemy" and it still is. I think my next gun purchase will be either a FAL or a G3.
