It was the summer of 98 at the local outdoor range. There was an old man there with a Colt 7.62x39 AR. He let me fire a few rounds and I was hooked. I remember that funky spong sound of the recoil spring and thought man this is awsome. It was a great day.

last month, be gentle, I'm a virgin well not anymore. I've been lusting after a AR since the 80's
Back in 1976 out in a gravel pit. I remember at the time they were "neat". Bought one about a year later.
My first time was Dec. 2003 when I bought my own first AR. (a bushy Varminter)
It was funny, my father was big on his Mii-14 when he used to Varmint hunt. You think I would have shot that before buying an AR. But I never did. Come to think of it, I don't think I had ever shot a semi-auto .223 before my AR... Now, of course, I'm hooked and already craving something smaller to go along with the tack driver, probably a home build m4gery. Gundraw |

actually, i'd been lusting for an ar for quite some time. had 3 safe queens, 2 of which i'd never fired, one of them being a .308 spanish mauser, one of the detonate on trigger pull rifles... good trigger but never had the nuts to put real ammo in it and shoulder the weapon at the range.
by virtue of swapping off a .30-30 winchester lever action, a pretty but sticky operating model 12 winchester 12 gauge and the mauser, along with some other hardware, i was able to get myself into a rock river 16" jobbie for 350. what a deal. never looked back, except to buy an acog. |

1972 - age 11. Bought my first one in `78 (SP1), and have always had at least one since.
Fired an AR for the first time in August 2003. Got my first AR in March 2004.
It was 1972 . It was an M16 that belonged to my friends brother who had just come back from Viet Nam . I have no idea where he got it , and at 12 years old it never entered my mind . All I can remember is how cool it was compared to the wooden stocked weapons that I had handled before
I also remember that all we had to do was walk a few hundred yards to the end of the road we lived on and set up stuff to blast at in the empty lot ........... and no one complained or even batted an eye . Compare that to today , where one of the fun stores I frequent is in a shopping center and when you buy a new weapon you have to pull around the back of the store and pull right up to the door so the ultra liberal soccer moms at the fitness center next door don't call 911 at the sight of any weapon ........ |

Have yet to shoot one. I don't need to shoot one though, I'm already hooked!
Age 17 and in the process of building one as I speak. |

Camp Perry 1977.
Juniors program. Goofy thing just felt right but sounded AWFULL at the time. Mind was focused on older vendor chick 80% that year, but then Puberty is hell!!! Got to know the thing in real time later. Camp Pendleton 86'. Plt. 1115 USMC WTBN. Little Phillipino Gunny Sgt. brought some focus to the issue. S-28 |

In my minds eye I can still see it. Would have been the late 70's or early 80's. Pretty sure it was a Colt AR-15, SP-1 maybe? I dunno, not up on Colts' model designations. Had the triangle handguards and the short scope mounted on the carry handle. It belonged to mom's husband at the time, now ex for over 18 yrs. He let me shoot it when the chance arose. I would have been around 10 at the time. Funny now, it was drilled into my head to never handle a firearm without an adult around, but I finger f#@$%d it every chance I got, along with the Python he kept in the bedside drawer. Oh the ass whipin I would have received if they had only known! I will remember that when my daughter is older, keep em locked in the safe.
I have had a facination with them ever since! Although the M4 in my safe is a tad different than that Colt! |

1972 - Uncle Sam gave me one with a happy switch currently have 3 "neutered" ( semi ) ARs - someday I hope to have the real deal |
November 1975 in Camp Pendleton during Field Medical Service school (M16).
June 1984, Ft. McClellan AL. in the form of a M16A1, made by "General Motors Hydromatic". I hope to aquire a AR in the same cosmetic configuation someday, since I probably won't ever be able to afford a real M16A1.
Ft Benning, GA, in June of 1985! of course it was an m16-A1 made by GM Hydramatic....
5 minutes after I bought my first one in late '99 (it was also the first one I had ever seen)
At the time it was a bushy pre-ban for $1300.... it is still my favorite! |
Sept. 2004 at Black Rifle Day...only two weeks till I purchase my ownhooked
I first shot a semi-auto AR in 1982 (I was 12) but I first fired a M16 in 1975 (I was 5). My dad is retired USMC so I've had the pleasure of firing A LOT OF STUFF especially when he worked at Firepower Div. Quantico MCCDC.
I bought and shot my first AR in 1992 when the winds of turmiol started brewing in the elected offices and the word "ban" was being tossed aroung. I had never shot one before then. It was a Colt Competition HBAR flat top. No lug, but did have the flash suppressor. I still have it, and have added a few more to the collection. I decided that if I was going to own one, that might be the time. Paid $619 for it.

July 2003 near Bismark NorDak. I was considering one but hadn't fired one. My pal out in the prairie let me use his. Hooked. The deal was, I was going to buy an AR & he was going to buy a .22 Hornet. I bought a DPMS Super Bull in December 2003 then a couple months later build my own A2 with the help of this board. As it stands now, I am 2.5 AR's ahead of my pal who hasn't got a Hornet yet Next build in December.

1984. I was 14, my friends and I were walking along the riverbank in the woods near my house and we met the "crazy neighbor" in cammo with his Colt AR-15. He let us shoot it. It was fun.
Ft Leonard Wood MO, summer of 1976, fired my first AR15 type rifle. I finally purchased my own, a Bushmaster AR in the early 1990's, have a total of three now.
Shortly after buying my SP1 in '79.
Too bad I sold it a few yrs later. That was the first and last time I did that shit. Never sell, ever. |
Early 80's.. Neighbor got an SP1 at a local gun show ( Bellvue High School) Not kidding about the high school BTW.. Try doing that now!! Anyway, I remember I was really dissapointed because it didnt sound like the ones on the SWAT tv show..
Been treated multiple times for the disease.. Still weak and unable to resist |

Mid 70's.
Had never fired one or seen one until I bought it for about $325. It wasn't really very accurate and I hated the peep sights, it jammed, and I got rid of it. I've owned quite a few Evil black rifles in the intervening years, and finally realized their accuracy potential with a SA G3 clone. Now I'm back in the AR15 camp with a Colt 6731. It also jams with some mags, but not with the 10 round that came with it. The 20 and 30 rd capacity mags seem to catch on stuff, and counter to the trend, I like the 10 rd mags. Now, each to his own, but I don't really see anything on the horizon, that will be available to civilians, and in a reasonable price range, that is a better platform than the AR. |
Early to mid 70s. Fired ARs belonging to friends but never considered buying one as I was into sporting guns. Spent most on shotguns. Anyway fast forward to 2000 now I have 4.
Had to be back in the mid-80's sometime. A buddy of mine bought one at Smitty's in AZ.(kind of an early version of Wal-Mart, one stop shopping,LOL) it was a Colt A2, we took it out in the desert and shot up a bunch of ammo in that gun. John Troyer, if you're out there, shoot me an e-mail, those were some good times buddy.

January of 1999. As a kid I even had the "M-16" BB-gun made by I think crossman. I was a death machine with that lil' weapon. Years later in 1999 I saw a gun at the time called a "Pre-Ban" made by PAC WEST ARMS I walked out of the gunshop with it for $950.00. Not too bad for 99' prices. Since then I've acquired 6 other ARs'.......only 494 more to go. (smirks)

It is, sadly, a terminal illness. |
The FIRST AR i ever shot was a Class 3 M-16. I started out with the guys 20" SP1 upper, and ripped thru a few mags, and then he put on his Ceiner 22 conversion, 10.5" upper, and I TORE thru a few 30rd mags...........
and then, my friend...... it BEGAN. S |

Always wanted one, so one day I found this site, ordered a stripped lower and built my own..

November 1993 Paris Island S.C. plt 1122 But it was an M-16 A2.
M16 in July 1969 in boot camp. A slick side w/3-prong flash suppressor. Long term memory is good, short term questionable!
I may have shot an AR-15 back in 1984-85. I had some gunnuts for friends in college. I shot some stuff, but it has been too long to remember for certain. My husband built an AR-15 in 1997, that i shot.
I shot an M-16 in basic training in 1983. |

The same time I got bitten by untold numbers of sand fleas......summer of '74.

Introduced to the AR by a Lawyer friend of the family in the early 80's. Was a Older SP-1 and I fell in love. Got my first around 1986, a AR-15 A2. I'm up to 10 total now and have been building rifles for friends for several years. 6 this week alone. The friend who introduced me to the AR is a Circuit Court Judge now and I wonder if he still has his SP-1.
