Were the first things you thought before coming to this forum that you no longer think?

I used to think....

I want an HBAR because its more accurate.
HP ammo will be better than FMJ ammo for self defense.
I dont want to use an optic because it will go tits up on me...
...and I will learn to shoot sub .5 MOA with irons, rapaid fire, standing... like all those MEGAFORCE/mall ninja guys on the net.

How about you?

I thought that I'd never get one because they're too expensive. I don't have one yet, but I picked up an Ameetec lower last week. I'm partially there.

I thought it would be cool to talk to other people about modern weapons

I didnt realize however how much time we would spend talking about bathrooms
and reading "Action Doll' posts

I thought ARF.net members are all jerks! wait I still do...

Just kidding.

One thing I learned is that you're not suppose to carry the AR15 by it's "carry handle".  Didn't know that before.

I used to think....

That I'd never get to 1000 posts.  (took almost 4 years, but it happened)
That one AR15 would be enough.  (yeah, right..........we won't even go there)
That vertical foregrips were useless blingbling.  (thanks to duke_nukem and the sept MODCC shoot, I now think differently)

YUP!
15 (almost 16 now) I bought my first AR (AR15A2 Gov't)

Back when the issue front handguard was sufficient and a A2 buttstock about all we could hope for...

I believe it more or less have something to do with safety.  When you carry by the handle, you have less control over where the muzzle of the rifle is pointing. and chances are, it's pointing at someone else's cajones.

I thought...

I needed M4 feedramps.

I'd never dish out the money for an ACOG.

I'd never hear "shoot it in the face" as answer to any question  until I visited the chat room.

everyone would have better manners than most forums (being firearms owners and all).

cleaning my AR would always take one hour.

looking through the EE would eventually get boring.

I thought i'd be happy with one AR-15. Here i am completing my first and already have plans drawn up for at least 3 more. lol.

Oh and i used to think that i wanted an HBAR for accuracy on my defense Ar-15. Well needless to say not anymore. I want lighter light.

Ditto and include the ones below.

1. .223 and 5.56 ammo actually tumbled and the 1/7 overstabilized the bullet causing ice pick type wounds.
2. Railed fore ends were useless.
3. Vertical grips were useless.
4. Lights on a gun was stupid.
5. Combat shooting used the same grips and stances as highpower shooting.
6. Combat firefights at 300 yards or more was common.
7. The Mini 14 could actually hang with the AR15.

I actually started visiting this board in late 90's and I also took part in the old AR15-L email list.  I've learned a lot since then and I appreciate all the great folks who share their knowledge here.

I thought I would be able to build an AR that would eventually replace all my other rifles. I haven't found that AR yet. But, I'm still trying.

I also thought the Badger Tac Latch was a joke/gimmick. That was, untill I smacked myself in the face last winter after my hand slipped off the charging handle while wearing thick, wet gloves. I hit myself in the cheek so hard, I was done shooting for the day.

*Edit, spelling.

I can get a 4x Chinese scope for less than $50.   These guys are crazy.

The TA01NSN is the one to get.   The Special Forces use it!
WTF is a BUIS?
And after I learned what it was, I wondered "WTF do I need one for? I have a scope."
WTF  is IBTL?
Man, I need a SIR like that FL guy!
Who needs slings?
USA steel vs G.I. :  A magazine is a magazine.
Blackhawk is cool.
Hesse- An affordable alternative?
I don't need an expensive SureFire, how many times do I shoot in the dark?

I also thought my Bushmaster 20" A2 from 1999 was a "National Match".  I would need only one AR and that a H-Bar was more accurate.  I do not need to spend 100 bucks more for a removable carry handle.  When the rubber coated "Delta" scopes were only $40.00.  Now 5 years later I have a pimped out M4 and stripped lower waiting to be built.  Now I can not decide what to build an A4 clone, SAM-R, or a SPR.

I guess I am the "odd ball" here.  I used to think I needed the rails, flashlights, lasers, free floating forearm,  vertical grips, match triggers, etc.  Now, I know that most of that stuff is pretty much just "stuff" and doesn't really make you a better shooter.  Only trigger time will do that.  I sold most of my "accessories" and bought AMMO and more guns .  Except I do believe in my Aimpoints and BUIS.  I live by the KISS concept.  But some day I will get an ACOG.

How do you identify targets in the darkness before you shoot?

Next, how do you mount that flash light you needed for question 1?

I thought that an AR could be milspec.

I really had no idea about OTM ammunition, as well as frangible stuff.

I thought that the M-16 was unreliable and faulty.

And I liked democrats.

This place changed me to no end. Talk about seeing the light with all the grace of a kick in the ass.

1. I honestly wasnt sure if they were called M16s or Ars and lurked till I found out before asking and looking like an asshat. The only one I had ever shot before was an M16.
2. Only a master gunsmith could possibly assemble any gun from scratch.
3. Nobody could possibly want a .22 rifle/pistol once they were older than twelve.
4. 1911s were called 'Colt .45s'.
5. Colt 45s were obsolete old war trophys your Grampa had.
6. Older military rifles like Lee Enfields or M1s were for your Grampa.
7. Scopes were only for hunters and snipers.
8. I would never become an internet nerd.

Several of us guys wanted to build an AR.  I knew how to employ it and maintain it, but I had not built one.  I said what the heck one day and typed in AR15.com, I'll be damned, there were a bunch of people that were on here.  Been here off and on ever since.  Now more On then off.

Thanks for the info guys!

When I first got here, it was only because I heard other people talking about this site.  I never dreamed I could actually own one of these beauties.  Reading the articles linked from here was so thrilling I was beside myself!  Then came the Ammo Oracle and the Magazine FAQ...Heaven for an Information Junkie like me!

But the biggest point of all:  I had no idea how much fun it was to shoot an AR-15.

I still get an enormous kick here 'cause there's always something new to learn about these rifles and there's always something new being developed for them (I get to buy those!).

1. I would never hang all that crap (optics, FF rail, VFG, flashlight) on my AR.
2. 100 rounds was a 'stockpile'
3. The AWB would never end.
