I have heard that Spanish SS109 is underpowered like Radway "green tip". Is there any truth to this?

i caution you in buying the spanish ss109!!!
i bought a 1000 rounds of it and it wouldn't function in any of my 5.56 weapons(FTE)75% failure rate! this was surplused for a reason! tried it in 4 different AR's and my .223 ak which will run on anything you feed it.
i'd recommend the Igman ss109!

I put about 600 rounds thru a real Colt barrel and it worked 100%.  Just got another 2k round case so will try to use it all by next week.

Bought maybe 10 boxes so far, only test drove 20 rounds, cycled fine in my 11.5" Bushmaster barreled SBR.

Tan slick finished box, black cog on side of box, taped with surgical tape, headstamp-- SB,  NATO star, green primer seal, no green on bullet, magnet sticks though.

Do the boxes have lot numbers on them like the Lake City stuff?  I'm guessing no.

it was accurate, it just didn't extract.
the brass was so soft it just peeled the rim off. i thought i had a muzzleloader since i had to have a cleaning rod with me all the time!
i would of taken it back (1200rds) but the day i got it, i put it all on strippers.
3 weeks ago i went shooting and i found one round that i hadn't shot up, i put in the top of a mag and sure a shit FTE and i didn't have a cleaning rod with me so my gun was out of commision till i got home.
i was extremly pissed when that ammo did work, and it still pisses me off to this day.
i'd buy a 100rds if it works for ya, great, but i'd be cautious.

From the over 7k I have fired of this I have made several observations.
It is about 200fps slower than M855 - however it has a very small ex spread and it std dev is minisclue - that said yes it is very accurate.

However it alos has very soft brass.

I have fired it in Diemcao C7 (20") C8 (14.5) barrels as well as Colt A2 (20) M4 (14.5) Colt 11.5 and 10.5 guns.

It worked very well in the 20" guns - but the carbines tended to shear off the rims of the casing - due too the sharper recoil.

After what you guys have said about this ammo, I wonder if its worth buying (extremely cheap)and reloading with fresh powder,or at the very least pull the bullets .

Regarding the ammo that did function,do you know what lot # or year it was made? Other than that I guess its a gamble.

Thanks for the info!

what is "(extremely cheap)" ?
if it is real cheap like $100/1000 or less, buy it, shoot it up!
get you some 3/8 hot roll steel to shoot at!
that where you can see the difference m193 and ss109!

wish it had worked in my 20"!

Had a chance to fire 1,000 rounds of this Spanish ss109 the past weekend thru an M16 w/an 11" Bushmaster upper.  Worked 100%.  Upper is stock except for the Wolff extra power extractor spring.  I did notice that the muzzle blast is not as bad with the ss109 as with the Norinco yellow box (which was the last 500 rds from storage).

This is very true if you are using a SAAMI spec AR, the chamber is much tighter than the Mil-Spec Chamber.  I have the exact problem on a Wilson Combat AR, but none on my Preban Colt.

And yes, the brass is very soft comparing to others.

Noticed it was a little milder than my other M855. It punches through 1/4" mild steel plate at 100 yards though. I never had any functioning problems. Mine came in tan a box with a sword between the S&B, bout the same design as the 7.62 SB I got. The 7.62 is good, but way underloaded, it was an old lot, and I read the 7.62 spanish meant for the cetme was a lot milder. My 16" carbine eats it right up, if you guys don't want it, I'll take it to do a few "quality assurance" tests!

The spanish stuff is really good!  Priced very good too.  Unfortunately its getting harder to find.  The brit stuff is a little underpowerd though.

I have about 500 rounds of this ammo that I could sell, if anyone is interested.
