What barrel profile is worst when it comes to barrel harmonics?
I imagine a skinny, pencil barrel would whip badly.

I am more wondering what the result would be with a fat under the hand guards/pencil in front of the FSB barrel. Terrible whip? No effect?

And since we're at it, can someone please refresh my memory on gov't profiles and what's happening during a shot with one of those?

It has more to do with "was the barrel profiled / machined concentric to bore" as to the barrel whip that you are talking about. You would be amazed how many aren't.

The profile has little to do with it actually.

I've seen featherweight david miller rifles shoot 1/4~1/2 MOA.

I have a DGA rifle that will hold 1/2" with a featherweight barrel.   The only advantage/disadvantage to a Thin barrel is heat up/ cool down also depends on the machinist
Heats up quicker,  but cools down faster.  I have a 7mm Rem mag with a 1.25" barrel,  ran a 15 round string for it and left,  came back 3 hours later and was still pretty damn hot.

Ted Yost says he can build a five pound rifle that will put one bullet within 1 minute at 1000 yards. But the barrel will be too light to put the second there.

well yeah, an AK is MOA for the first shot. It's the second one that throws the group to 8 MOA....

Basically, I'm asking if there's an adverse effect of having a barrel fat (like .75") under the hand guards, then dramatically stepped down (to like .625") from the FSB forward.
